Duke ED Class of 2020 Applicants Discussion Thread

I remember reading this ED thread from last year for Vanderbilt University. And it was long but I read through all of it. And I saw how some wanted so much to get into the university. And one of them couldn’t. And I remember everyone was asking about her but she didn’t come for a day. Meh, what I’m implying is, is that these college admissions can be one serious thing. Your emotions, worries and thoughts seem to depend on it. So I really hope everyone gets what’s best for them.

@Extinguisher I totally agree. I try to keep my expectations low so I don’t feel too crushed if I don’t get in and I’ll feel so high if I do.

@anxiousenior1 @Extinguisher

Thank you both for your words! I feel a little better now. From the 2019 ED thread, I saw someone from my state was not offered an interview, so I might not be contacted for one at all.

I really wish we all get into Duke. I’m hoping for the best, but prepping for the worst.

Good luck on your interviews!

Is our GPA weighted equally with our test scores? I’m hoping my GPA (4.00 UW 4.63 W) looks better than a 33 ACT. I’m ranked 13/605+… :-?

^That’s all pretty equal. And pretty great:)

@Lift35 from what I understand, your transcript is the single most important thing in your college application. That being said, your 4.0 will be considered with the rigor of your curriculum (ap,IB, honors classes).

Are any of you taking multivariable calculus right now? Or is it more common to take calc BC as a senior? I’m taking multi right now and I was wondering if that would give me any sort of an edge in the admissions process

I don’t think so because many schools don’t offer it and dual enrollment isn’t always an option for many students. BC Calculus is more common. Admission officers can’t dock us for not taking classes we don’t have the opportunity to take.

Anyone taking AB Calc senior year?

@Mango920452 taking BC :stuck_out_tongue: barely passed AB last year (by barely passing I mean I barely got an A second semester, strict asian parent standards)

@erhid98 I’m taking multi!! It’s a blast haha only six other people in my class. I think the classes you take are all in context with the school you are at. Some schools have more opportunities than others and admissions all takes that into account

I’m taking AB, but my school doesn’t offer BC so…

Would IB SL Calculus be the same as AP Calc BC or AB? (Also, what’s the difference between AB and BC…?)

I think AB=SL and BC=HL, but I do know Duke only gives credit for the HL IB classes, though it gives credit for both AB and BC Calc. They are just different levels of calculus; BC calc is not that different from AB (at least in my school, they just review AB again and do 2 extra chapters, but you can’t take BC without AB first :frowning: ).

It depends on the school as well. At my school, SL Calculus is regular Calculus with more assessments but they all take the AP test. BC covers the same material plus other subjects like Euler’s, sequences, series, and a few other things.

@Mango920452 I meant in terms of rigor, I know most elite schools only accept HL exam credits, but I was wondering what’d the rigor would be equal to relative to the AP class. My school only has AP Calc AB

My course load this year is IB HL English, IB HL Economics, AP Statistics (took IB SL Calc junior year), IB HL History, IB SL Biology, IB HL Chemistry, IB Theory of Knowledge @Mango920452

@Lift35 I guess the “rigor” would depend by school, like @anxiousenior1 said. I know at my friends school, IB Calc SL is treated as a “regular Calc class” with less pre-requisites, and one step below AB Calc. But at his school, you can take Calc BC after taking SL Calc without taking Calc AB, (at my school, you cannot take BC without AB).

But I guess it’s Duke’s problem to figure out how our schooling systems work.

@Mango920452 I think it depends because I have a friend who took SL Calc with me last year and is taking AP Calc AB now and she says the AP class is slightly easier. Then again the IB Program is a whole different beast
