Hey guys, I need some feedback. I’m thinking about responding to following Duke app essay prompt, but I’m not sure I have an appropriate topic. I was thinking I could write about my sister shoplifting (she confided in me, I was little and didn’t know how to respond… but I knew it was wrong), but I’m not sure if this sounds too clich

Ok well what did you end up doing? You imply that you did nothing because you were young. That’s understandable… but the question asks what you did, and the answer for you is nothing. You felt it was wrong… and didn’t do anything. That’s not exactly flattering. The reason is because you were young, so the question “what would you have done differently” doesn’t really even apply. “Well, I would have tried to be two years older when it happened.” It just doesn’t work. I say choose something you actually acted in response to at an age when you could make decisions.

oh whoops sorry that wasn’t clear. Here’s what happened. After my sister told me I was confused but ended up telling my mom because that’s all I felt like I could do in my position. My mom didn’t handle it well… in short my sister was finally caught shoplifting a short time later. Sorry for leaving that out, I see now that my message wasn’t conveyed well.

I thought about trying this topic too since one of my friends shoplifted before and actually asked me if I wanted anything (I declined), but I think it’s just kind of an awkward issue so I’m staying away from it. I guess you could write about that, since you did do the right thing.
