Duke Lacrosse - Post Scandal!

Good luck Duke.

Wow, it’s hard to believe that it’s been three years.

I’m glad the team stuck together and have risen up and achieved great things together. Sounds like they have a wonderful coach too.

I wonder how the three accused boys are doing now. I hope quite well after all they went through.

I wonder that, too, Susan. I thought I remembered reading that Reade Seligmann was playing for Brown but that article says that none of the players transferred.

Yes, I believe Reade did go to Brown. I interpreted that statement in the article to mean the remaining players OTHER THAN the three accused young men.

Underreported in all this is how they hosed the dismissed coach who went to some two-bit second division place.

I do wonder how the coach and the three young men are doing. I would guess that the coach’s career was ruined - college lacrosse coaching has got to be a relatively small world, and once that good head coaching job at the powerhouse school was lost, it must be hard to recover.
The young men had lasting efects, no doubt, but they did get some sympathetic publicity, especially as the truth played out, and probably even more behind the scenes, the coach, though, just seemed to get fired.
Not a pretty episode for anyone involved.

There has been life after Duke for the coach and some of the other Duke Players.

Quote: "how they hosed the dismissed coach who went to some two-bit second division place. "

Oh well, looks like the coach is doing well. From article, "The Bulldogs finished their inaugural Division I season with an impressive 10-5 record, playing such opponents as top-ranked Virginia, Maryland, Loyola, Brown and Army. "

Actually, it looks like the ex-Duke coach is thriving too!
http://www.turnto10.com/jar/sports/local/article/ex-duke_lacrosse_coach_finds_success_at_bryant/10868/

“Next year, Pressler will coach the U.S. team in the World Games in England.”

That does not suggest to me that his career was ruined, nor should it have been.

The NCAA gave the players an extra year of eligibility for their “lost” season. A friend stayed on after graduation (he enrolled in a master’s program) to play 1 more year. Would be nice to leave as a national champion!

Good for them. While my sympathy is with the coach and the young men, there is still an object lesson there for all our kids. Some of those things that can seem dumb, or funny or harmless, can get out of hand and have long-lasting repercussions that seem almost unthinkable.

I’m thinking of one of the prom threads where a parent posted that their son and friends got on a prom bus and searched the bus, finding one beer way in the back, and threw the beer off because they were competing in a state meet later in the week, and didn’t want anything to even inadvertently jeopardize their eligibility, another lesson.

Thriving is quite kind word selection. He goes from the lax Final Four and can only find a Division I job by backdooring through Division II, his career set back by 10 years and you call it thriving?

“son and friends got on a prom bus and searched the bus”

Smart kids. That’s lawyer thinking right there. If you want to stay out of trouble, it’s not enough to just be innocent of wrongdoing…you need to CYA and make sure no one can accuse you of wrongdoing.

Kudos to some very smart parents/teachers/coaches if they taught these kids to think this way.

Does anyone know if the group of faculty who issued a public statement condemning the players ever issued an apology?

Colin Finnerty is playing lacrosse at Loyola in Baltimore. Reade Seligman is playing at Brown. I had opportunity to see both play this season – they are doing well. Pressler regrouped and is coaching at Bryant and moving the program from DII to D1. He’s getting good recruits at Bryant. Duke is in the Final Four, this weekend at Gillette Stadium at Foxboro.

Some of the Duke players received national recognition this morning … Ned Cratty is a finalist for the Terwaarton Trophy – the lacrosse version of the Heisman. He and also won the Lt. Col. J. I. Turnbull Award - Outstanding Attackman. Ryan McFadyen and Brad Ross were named to the 2009 USILA Scholar All-America Team.

Re Post #11: Yes, the coach does seem to be thriving. Did you catch the part about him coaching the US Team in England…? He is doing wonders with the Bryant team and having fun.

How does that possibly set one’s career back 10 years?

Did you also read the article that says he has been offered other D-1 jobs, but opted to stay at Bryant??? He sees the “backdoor”, not as a backdoor, but as a challenge.

And in line with post 13, has anyone heard anything lately about the false accusor? Or her partner who initially sided with her then recanted?
