Duke Scholarships And Morehead (UNC) Chances?

<p>Hey, I’m new to College Confidential, and I’m not really sure how these “Chance” threads go, but I’ll try to post as much as I can to get an accurate response.</p>

My father has a good salary and my mom doesn’t work, however, my mom’s dad has cancer and we are currently paying for operations and stuff, so if I dont get a significant scholarship, I definitely won’t be able to go to Duke even if I’m accepted.</p>

<p>I highly doubt you would get a scholarship to Duke (its so competitive, you could, but its very unlikely). More realistic if FA, which they have a pretty good department for. If you apply Regular Decision (Jan 2nd is the deadline I think) you can compare your merit money (which you should get at Morehead, or consider High Point too) and your aid money and see the best fit</p>

<p>But if your dad makes a good amount of money you probably won’t qualify for FA (or very little at most) (can you roughly list his income?)</p>

<p>That’s what I was thinking I should do. I’m planning to apply ED to UNC and Columbia, and apply RD to Duke (because ED at Duke is binding). That way, if I am eligible for the Morehead, I will be able to attend UNC instead of paying $50,000 a year at Duke (which my family can’t afford at all).</p>

<p>What are my weak points that would prevent me from recieving a scholarship at Duke. Your suggestions would definitely benefit me, since I have one year left before college apps.</p>

<p>Duke only gives a few schollys every year, like 40-50 I think, and while you are definitely talented, there are people with perfect test scores and interesting research/internships. </p>

<p>ED is binding to Columbia, maybe UNC has EA though</p>

<p>Well after rereading I guess you have a shot at a scholly, but with 27k applications and 40-50 schollys you can see that it is very very very very tough</p>

<p>It depends, we need to know what your family income is. Duke meets all of what they determine you need (through FAFSA or something like that).</p>

<p>Thanks Patriots Fan!! I just checked it out, and it seems that Duke allows you to tell them if there are situations which affect the amount of financial aid you need. my father makes anywhere from 190,000-200,000 per year, my mom doesnt work, and i have two brothers. my father constantly sends money to his family overseas and is currently helping pay for my cousins college tuition in Russia, all aside from the expenses related to my grandfather’s cancer.</p>

<p>No problem. I’d definitely apply to UNC EA (You are very competitive for a scholly there)</p>

<p>I know you have circumstances where although your fathers income is quite high, money can be short. I’m not sure how that effects FA so I’d use the FA calculator to find out about what you will have to pay</p>
