Yard sign? Do you mean like a political campaign yard sign? I have never seen such a thing - not even for athletic teams.

Neighbor son has two of those, one for baseball and one for basketball.

That’s a new one for me. Now that I’ve said that, I will see 3 the next time I venture out.

We see bumper stickers in this part of the country, but I have never seen yard signs for anything but politicians or businesses.

Yard signs are common here, but they’re not like the political signs you all are imagining. They are usually hand made out of plywood and painted school colors, often in the shape of a football/basketball/musical note, etc. with the kid’s last name on them. They’re small - maybe a foot in diameter and on a low post.

No athletes or musicians in our house, so we’ve never had one. Love the idea of one for NMF, but D would have been mortified!

okay2beproud- I think you should rent a billboard about your child and the TIP program.

I went to the pet food store today & got a * Wuff Da* sticker.
:)

My kids both went to TIP. One even received “Grand Recognition” for his math score and was invited to go up to Duke to recceive some award (he didn’t go, but he did get some medallion thing at a local State ceremony). I would never dream of putting any TIP decal on my car, buying a TIP shirt or any of that paraphernalia. While I am proud of my kids, I would consider that kind of decal tacky, and merely free advertising for the program.

OMG…Duke Tip car magnets and NMF yard signs?

My kids would have killed me if I had displayed such things. The fridge is fine.

We did the football yard sign. It wasn’t big and you just leave it up for the season. I think it’s meant to help create school spirit and community support. We didn’t get a TIP sticker or magnet, probably didn’t have them back them but I probably wouldn’t have put it on the car. I did get an honor roll bumper sticker in middle school, last semester, too late to put it on the car, which I probably would have, my son was proud of it.

My D didn’t even tell me her school was having an honors award ceremony and that she was receiving two academic awards.
I found out afterward, at graduation, when the awards were listed on the program and when her friends parents mentioned that " it was too bad we couldn’t go to the award ceremony".
:o

I have heard of some communities that have signs for when a baby is born, but haven’t seen them myself- haven’t seen any other kind either.

I * do have* a National Wildlife Federation certified Wildife habitat sign though. ( & [one that says Pesticide Free Zone](http://watoxics.org/healthy-homes-gardens-1/pesticide-free-zone/pfz-slide-shows/slideshowsand ) )
It’s pretty nice. ;)

mom2collegekids - you might want to rethink putting that yard sign on the fridge. It is likely a bit unwieldy.

OK, lets be kind to ok2beproud and assume that this is the parent’s first look into the world of the high achieving kids.

OK, time’s up.
Your kid did well on one test.

Forget the yard sign for this one - it’s way too middle school.
Glad to have you here where you can learn what your high-achieving kid needs to know about high school classes and college admissions.

Yard signs are huge around here for athletics, fine arts, cheerleaders, drill team, etc. There is almost nothing in the way of academic recognition - no honor student bumper stickers or honor rolls - so I was pretty surprised when D brought the sign home. And it does look like a political sign, about 3 feet by 2 feet. D thought it was funny, in a nerdy kind of way.

My kids both went to CTD, which is sort of like TIP / CTY, and like jym, there is no way in hell I would put a CTD decal on my car. Tacky, tacky, tacky. Quiet knowledge of things is sometimes enough. Or should be.

If my daughter gets into the school she wants, then she wants me to take out a Superbowl ad.

^^ If you can afford a superbowl ad, you can afford ANY college! Good luck!! If she gets in, I think you should start a contest here to develop the ad. Deal??

As for car decals, when my bro and I were in college, my parents car (they only had one back then) had both of our school decals in the back window. My brother threatened to scratch off the “V” and the final “AR” on my Vassar sticker, and I threatended to scratch off the “Y” of his Yale decal. We sooo wanted our parents car to drive around with “A$$” and “ALE” in the rear window!!

Duke TIP and Stanford EPGY are jokes. I got invitations from both and turned down both.

Even CTY is pretty easy to get into. It’s no big deal for any of them. “Look at me! My child is better than yours!”

What’s even worse is that I once saw a lady with Yale, Columbia, and UCLA stickers on her car. Her children were all toddlers.

S1 was a TIP kid (state recognition.woo) and we didn’t even get a magnet:(
Is it too late to ask for my money back? It’s only been ten years, lol.

One year our h.s. sold student athlete signs as a fundraiser. They weren’t too offensive since they didn’t have the kids’ names or even sport on them. They just said something like “Home of a HHS athlete, Go Cougars!”

ROTFL! Actually, a lot of the parents on this thread have children who’ve graduated from college already. Mine is in grad school. He would have disowned me if I had put up any kind of sign on our car or our lawn.
