Duke TIP car magnet

I saw a Duke TIP car magnet in the carpool line this week. Do you agree it’s just too much? Does anyone really want to know her child is gifted?

Blech! I hate all those “My kid is an honor student at Above-Average Elementary”-type things.

I totally agree. Ugh. What’s next – a sticker that gives the percentile of their child’s SAT score?

I did see a funny bumper sticker a couple of weeks ago that said, “My kid is selling your honor student the answers to the test.”

:)

It could be a nice way of connecting with other TIP families.
As for the bragging end, most people have never heard of TIP anyway, so I don’t see what the big deal is about having a TIP car magnet.

Aren’t there better ways of connecting with TIP families? What is one supposed to do after spotting such a car magnet? Take down the license number? Then what?

I’m going to get myself a bumper sticker (for my non-existent car): “My child graduated with honors from day-care.”

From the context of the conversation I take it that TIP has something to do with a gifted program. What exactly does TIP stand for?

"I did see a funny bumper sticker a couple of weeks ago that said, “My kid is selling your honor student the answers to the test.”

I’m afraid I could probably have legitimately put that sticker on my car… :)

Sportsmama – TIP is Talent Identification Program. In certain parts of the country if a 7th grader takes the SAT and scores over a certain percentile they are invited by Duke to attend special summer sessions.

“My kid beat up your Honor student” Lovely bumper sticker I’ve seen on more than one occasion.

^ That is one that I loathe. It is totally anti-intellectual. That person’s kid beat up an Honor Student, and that kid sounds like a bully.

^^I hate that one too. It celebrates stupidity, violence, and bullying - three things the world has too much of already.

“Aren’t there better ways of connecting with TIP families? What is one supposed to do after spotting such a car magnet? Take down the license number? Then what?”

I’ve had great conversations with people whom I connected with due to their bumper stickers.

The magnet is not at all pretentious. My son has never done TIP. We got a TIP magnet at the NAGC conference last year, but we keep it on our refrigerator to hold papers there.

One of my kids participated in TIP and we would not display such a magnet - except on the refrigerator at home.

The refrigerator is perfectly fine.

I am so sick of hiding my children in the shadows for fear of offending someone…my son is a Duke TIP scholar, has qualified for the Academy for Summer Studies, my daughter is following right behind him…I’m tired of hiding their accomplishments while I listen to everyone else boast about how their kid was wronged by a teacher who had had enough of their antics, their kid who was suspended wrongly for selling drugs…give me a break! What on the planet is wrong with being proud of my child’s gifts and serious attitude toward school? I see a lot of jealousy in this thread…

I had never heard of TIP until I read this thread, but I don’t care who puts what on their car - even NRA stickers 'cause they are good for target practice.

Well, my D did get a yard sign from her school announcing that she was a National Merit Semifinalist, which was a refreshing change from the various athletics yard signs there are around here.

I’m glad to see two years later that my opinion hasn’t changed. At least I’m consistent.
