Many students are invited to Duke’s TIP program as a result of SSAT testing for private school entrance. Brown University has a summer session for high school students that offers substantial financial aid.

Garrity-
I don’t think that is quite right. Duke TIP invites students (based on their SSAT scores) to take the SAT in 7th grade to see if they qualify for TIP. You have to have scored in the 99th %ile on some standardized test to be invited to test for admission to TIP. Unless that has changed in recent years, that was/is the procedures. Maybe you are thinking of the other program for younger (5-6th gr) kids?

In the public junior high where I work, the invitations to test are given to all GT students. Testing is also open to any student who is interested.

I suspect that the criteria have changed since my kids were in 7th gr. There were not two tiers of programs then as there are now. With the two different levels of programs, with 2 different admissions/acceptance criteria (scores on the SAT or ACT) I would imagine that they encourage all students to test. I recall, when my older s was in 7th gr (1998), he had just changed schools, and had to prove, by providing the documentation, that he’s scored in the 99th %iile on a standardized test and could sign up to take the SAT for TIP. I guess things have changed.

No one in my district seems to be invited to take tests to be considered for CTY, though I know of private school students who are. Still, when my S decided he wanted to attend a CTY camp, we wrote to CTY to ask whether his MCAS scores were acceptable and were told they were. He proceeded to take the SAT. I believe if he had just taken the SAT and sent in his scores he would have been fine. You don’t need to be invited to apply to do so.

CTY, TIP offer lot of need based and merit based aid. They offer nice summer programs.

when is the deadline for TIP summer 2007?

Hi – sorry to bring back an old thread – but can anyone offer insight as to which humanities courses fill up quickly?

I only qualify for the writing-intensive 8th-10th grade Center courses based on my SAT scores. Out of the courses that fit this criteria, I am interested in 4:

Madness and the Mind in Literature
Dystopian Society
Utopian Society
Phantom Literature

ranked 1-4, respectively.

Are these courses popular? Will four choices be enough to ensure that I’ll have a space, assuming that I get my app in during the first few possible days?

/hihihihihihihihih/ bump

I don’t know how popular those specific courses are, but I think if you get your application in early, you’ll probably get your first choice. Both of my kids attended TIP for a total of 5 summers between them, and the got their first choices each time. I suppose you could call the TIP office to ask how fast those courses usually fill up, but it probably varies from year to year, and all you could really do if they are popular is apply early. I think you’ll be fine.

ok, thanks!!!

Agreed - I tried to get my son’s application in as soon as they started accepting them and had no problem with him being placed in his first choice.

I know two students who did the Costa Rica program 2 summers ago and still talk about it. But get the app in EARLY.

My son did TIP at Duke twice and wanted to go back again, but he got into got into Governor’s School (free!) and loved that too.

My son did the Costa Rica program this summer and said it was the best thing he ever did.

7th grade students who score in the 95th percentile or above in at least 2 standardized tests are allowed to take the SAT at that grade. If their score qualifies, they get recognized and they qualify for those Summer Studies. That’s how they can get into those summer classes, to my knowledge. So if he is a junior now, I think it is too late to start the process.

Since the thread is 4 years old, I expect it is! ;)

sorry to bring back an old thread, but I got into the costa rica program (bio diversity) an I applied in mid-April. Interesting, as I was told almost everything international and at duke were filled.
