Duke University 2016 Hopefuls Waiting Room

^Then you won’t be denied if its only for 6% of the USNWR. If you have high test scores, they easily balance each other out, you really don’t need to freak out haha

The schools definitely want to do well in USNWR (who wants to do bad), but at the same time, they want people who want to go to Duke (well yield is another factor in USNWR) and people who would make a difference.

Seahawks…focus on what you have to offer the campus community and a lot less on your class ranking. If your stats, on whole, are in the median or above…you have a place at the table. Once at the table…the rest of the app makes the decision for them.

BTW…the “chances” posts are a bit amusing to me. Posts with 2200+ SAT or 33+ ACT’s asking for chances is a lot like asking a teacher if you got an “A” on a report card and never received below a 98% on a test before the final.

Those kinds of stats are “A’s” but not all “A’s” are accepted. Again…its not just about stats.

Patriotsfan…I like your thought on Yield. Imagine what Duke’s yield would be if they accepted half the class in ED…probably about 60% (Penn does). Plus…if they admitted half of class ED…they would send a strong competitive signal to future Ivy applicants with an interest in Duke to seriously consider Duke before ED’ing elsewhere.

Ya it seems like Duke only wants to fill about 40% of the class ED, but I am guessing if the number of ED applications keep on rising they will take a serious look at raising that a bit.

True…40% seems to be the number. Duke seems to want to keep 60% available to admit Ivy ED rejects/deferrals. Another thought…I am betting schools like UNC hold off EA decisions till end of January do so to eliminate applicants who must withdraw apps when accepted ED to other schools.

Hey guys I am a student applying ED to Duke and felt the need to address this. I go to an alite private school in Boston and we mirror our admissions process very similar to those of Harvard, since the head of our admissions is a retired Dean of admissions from Harvard. I am actually a student member in the admissions committee and I decide who gets into our school. I want to let you know how we look at applicants, and then translate that into the college process. We have around an 18% acceptance rate.

We give points to everything in an applicants application ranging from 1-10 points. Anything from SSAT scores, GPA, extracurriculars, rec’s, essays, etc. is on a 10 point scale. If a student lives in a single parent household that is points as well. At the end of the process depending on how many points an application gets, it is put into a category: Strongly Accept, Weakly Accept, Waitlisted, Weakly Denied, Strongly Denied. To the students in the middle categories, we review their applications a second or third time in a committee and then make a final decision. To students in the strongly accept category, there is no need to review their application, and the same holds true for students in the strongly deny category.

Now to colleges. Dukes middle 50% GPA is around a 3.7-4.0 and their middle 50% for ACT/SAT is a 31-34. If your ACT/SAT and GPA is within the 50% that’s great, but they’re basically seen as this: “It’s not enough to get you in and not enough to get you denied.” So if you’re within it, then you’re other parts such as EC’s and essay must also be very impressive to get you in. If someone has a 4.2 and a 2370 then they can rely on those scores to be the major deciding point for their application. If you are in the bottom 25% then you need amazing EC’s and and essays. My admissions supervisor once read a rec sarting with this: “I have been waiting 38 years to write this letter.” Those are the types of things that are going to get you in ig you are underneath the 50%.

So if it is one thing you can take away from what I said it is to look at you’re stats and if you are within the range then they aren’t enough to get you in, but also no enough to get you out.

Dang, the new ACT 31-34 makes my 32 look worse. Hope they overlook it due to me being international (although I do come from an english speaking country)

Wow, I’m surprised the 75th percentile for ACT is 34. I’m 1 above it though :)

Thanks for the heads up prepurm1216, I guess I’m in the middle portion cuz my regional officer called my school 3 days ago, asking for my 1st quarter grades. But I guess I got into the committee sessions, so at least I’m being looked at.

weren’t you supposed to send those in a while ago?

^ Admissions offices call your guidance counselor for those grades if they feel they need more information in deciding whether to accept, defer, or reject you.

Is that what u think. Or do you know that for a fact?

No, first quarter grades are due for all ED applicants…it’s not indicative of any advancement, or of any status–it’s just something they require. I sent mine in on the 10th of November, I’m surprised they waited so long to ride you about turning them in. ;)

I think that my situation is a little bit different since my school grades by semesters, so we dont send out early grades to colleges at all, unless they ask. And I’m not certain about the “being looked at part”; i feel like if they’re asking for them this late in the game, I’m still a contender… at least that’s what my guidance counsellor said (and she talks with my regional director often lol):P

Well, did you apply ED? Because if you did, I’m almost 100% positive your 1st quarter (or first marking period) grades were mandatory for the application process.

Yeah, I applied ED, and honestly who knows. you can put any amount of significance, relatively nothing or a lot, on a college contacting your school, so don’t spoil my fun :P

Fourth bullet down

^Thanks for reading the last clause of my last post, a*…

8 days guys. 8 days.

Any chance they’ll let ED decisions early out this year instead of making us wait till 6 on the 15th?
