Duke University Early Decision. Chances? 31 on the ACT?

I’ve been searching for the best information regarding ED at Duke and have not found what I’m looking for. I want to know if I could get in with a…

I’ve been reading on here and it seems everyone who is attending Duke has 34s or greater on the ACT. I don’t know how much my score will set me back in regards to my chance of admission. I figured committing to ED would drastically increase my chances but I am not certain. Could you please tell my what you think and give me your insight? I would greatly appreciate it.

I doubt applying ED would drastically increase your chances.

Test Scores
Middle 50% of
First-Year Students Percent Who
Submitted Scores
SAT Critical Reading: 660 - 750 87%
SAT Math: 680 - 780 87%
SAT Writing: 660 - 760 87%
ACT Composite: 30 - 34 43%

Your stats are low for the school. My concern would be that as an ED applicant, you’d either be rejected or deferred as the school waits to see who else with better stats applies.

What is your major?

Is your family fine with paying whatever Duke says it should pay?

Will you test again?

Where else will you be applying? You should apply to some safety schools for some merit scholarships as back ups.

For Duke, that’s probably just the norm.

ok…

ACT Composite… 31-34… 33-35

It doesn’t look good for an ACT 31 non-URM getting accepted ED.

and, jvtDad is right…4 APs (or more) senior year is de rigueur for seniors applying to top schools.

I know two kids who got into Duke ED, one with a 30 and one with a 32 ACT. FWIW, both were recruited athletes.

*both were recruited athletes. *

ha ha…you should have led with that. They might have gotten in with even lower stats if they were desired athletes.

Recruited athletes for Div I sports don’t fall under the normal rules for acceptance.

^ Yes, I was trying to imply in a not too subtle way that a 31 is low for Duke. But, on the other hand, there was a Duke ED acceptance from my kids’ HS from the HS class of 2010. Kid had a 31 ACT, 3.9x UW, 10-12 APs, and was ranked around 10 out of 300.

Also, I think the aforementioned athlete with the 32 would likely have gotten in w/o coach’s support: ranked 3rd of 300+, 16 APs, Natl. AP Scholar, strong nonathletic ECs, etc.
