Accepted!
Pratt Electrical Engineering.
This is amazing!! Your daughter and mine would be great friends it sounds like! Fingers crossed for my D24 for regular decision. Hopefully they will meet at Duke on the dance team!!
deferred
My son was deferred last year and accepted RD- so keep up the hope- but I know how hard it is to wait several more months! Hang in there.
Daughter was deferred. LOCI submitted to portal and admissions office. She took the weekend to pivot and look at the upsides. Grateful to still be under consideration even if the chances are slim. Also, grateful to the she can see and weigh her other options. ED eliminates that. Thatās the tough thing about ED, imo ā it fosters absolutely conviction and focus on one school out of necessity. Congrats to the yeses! May all the best opportunities imaginable rain onto the not admitted ⦠and wishing all us deferred a pound of patience and openmindedness.
Thank you for that. My daughter was deferred as well and itās been a rough week.
Congratulations!! Do you mind sharing stats? Thank you!
Of course! 36/1590, 10 APs, 5 in senior year, rural state, Hispanic female, 4.69 gpa. Put my all into my essays and I wrote about being bilingual and bicultural. Toured Pratt and had plenty of work experience with my field of interest. My ECs were one national award and dedicated 4 year school and club swimmer, and community service.
My daughter got rejected by Duke and deferred EA by UChicago. She is nervous if her essays, stats and recs are good enough.
Any advise on if she should think differently about how she has written her essays before applying to RD schools?
The acceptance rate at Duke was less than 8%. Iām certain it had nothing to do with her essays and everything to do with it being extremely competitive.
Not entirely true. Duke has an admission and grant allocation agenda that is not merit based.
Go to the the Duke website and read the acceptance statistics, or just read my comment below.
Both of those schools are super competitive. I would revisit her college list and make sure she has a balance of schools that she likes and feels good about. It doesnāt hurt to revisit essays and applications components that are in her control. UChicago isnāt very open about their deferral data from what I can tell, but they donāt typically admit very many during their regular cycle (.5%). Duke was my daughterās top choice and it was tough getting her to be opening minded about weighing the pros of other schools this fall. Ironically, she hung in there and absolutely loves one of the options she wasnāt taking seriously at all until she visited and met with their honors college director and several current students in the program. That helped so much with the Duke deferral news. As for essays and ECs, we had a person review and give her feedback on the wording of the activities as well as her essays (CollegeVine ā we found an advisor familiar with the schools she was most interested in. Just paid for the essay review service so it wasnāt nearly as expensive as hiring an advisor). That helped her so much. Her essays went from very good to compelling with just a few adjustments based on the recommendations of the reviewer. I liked that it was not invasive at all. The essays were still her work. It was good to see where she needed more clarity, specifics, or better alignment to her overall application theme. It also helped to get advice on the wording of the ECs. The same information can come across completely differently with simple changes of word choice and the addition of specific details/data to paint a clear picture of impact. All the best to your daughter ⦠this process is grueling but I am confident that your daughter has what it takes to flourish wherever she goes to college. <3
Apologies but you seem to be incorrect and sorry your kid got rejected.
āGuttentag said in a release that 18% of admitted students in the Early Decision round come from the Carolinas, representing a 25% increase from last year. Of those admitted, 121 come from North Carolina and the remaining 24 hail from South Carolina.ā
Wrong once againā¦
āThe University received 6,240 Early Decision applicants, which is over 1,000 more than any previous Early Decision round and represents a 28% increase from 2022, bringing the acceptance rate to a record low 12.9%.ā
Your quote is what Iāve seen published on Dukeās website and in The Chronicle article about this yearās ED cycle. Iām seeing 18% of accepted ED students are from NC/SC.
Hereās the full article.
Duke Sees Record Number of Applications for Early Admission
Increase fueled by applicants from the Carolinas
Duke received a record number of early decision applications in 2023, driven by students from the Carolinas.
In all, the university received 6,240 early decision applications, a 28 percent increase over last year, and Dukeās highest number of early decision applicants by more than 1,000.
āDuke always attracts phenomenally talented students,ā Provost Alec Gallimore said. āOur goal in providing more equitable access to a Duke education was to help more academically outstanding students from the Carolinas see Duke as an option. Iām so pleased that we will be admitting more students from the region we call home.ā
Duke accepted 806 applicants via early decision, 145 of them from the Carolinas, an increase of 25 percent over last year. Of those, 121 students are from North Carolina and 24 are from South Carolina. They represent 18 percent of all students admitted through early decision this year. In all, 12.9 percent of the early decision applicants were accepted to the Class of 2028.
With the fall 2023 semester, Duke offered full tuition grants for undergraduates admitted to Duke from the Carolinas whose family incomes are $150,000 or less. For students from family incomes of $65,000 or less, Duke will provide full tuition grants, plus financial assistance for housing, meals and some course materials or other campus expenses, without the need for student loans.
So, now weāre moving onto Stanford? Are we seeing a pattern? These are incredibly selective institutions⦠Weāre not sure what your point is here, since we canāt verify the facts that you assertā¦
Do you have any proof of the statistical claims you have made repeatedly?
They seem incorrect and in the absence of proof should be corrected or removed as they are defamatory towards Duke. Please show your proof that you claim to have.
I canāt seem to locate a photo of the new group of surgical residents at Stanford on their website. Could you please provide a link?
This thread is the official thread for those applying ED to Duke. There are clear directions at the top of the thread. This is NOT a thread for people who were not accepted or their parents to vent about all the things that they think are wrong about Duke, and it is definitely not the place to post inaccurate statistics about Duke admissions.

I know I may be a bit late, but I do recommend having your daughter share her essay with people who are close to her (both adults and those her own age). Thatās what I did and I also asked some of my favorite teachers what they thought. Take that criticism and see what it does to make the essay easier to read/more compelling. I wish your daughter all the best in her applications.
Where are the portal did she submit the LOCI? My Daughter was also deffered and we canāt figure it out.
