duke vs. georgetown vs. boston college

How do duke/georgetown/bc compare? What makes each school better than the others and what makes them worse?

Really it depends on what field you are looking at for an accurate comparison, but it seems to be Duke, Georgetown, BC in terms of overall academics. However, for something like International Relations GTown definately takes the cake.

In terms of overall academic reputation, it’s Duke, Gtown, and BC in that order, with BC being a distant 3rd. Duke has that school spirit thing going on, similar to BC and Gtown, but it also has better academics than the other two (unless it’s gtown SFS).

ive heard that most ppl on the east coast see bc (and bu) as a joke- is that true? apparently its really easy to get into (if u live on the east coast)?

not true at all… although my school has very good connections with bc and a lot of kids got in… one really qualified girl got deferred (she later got in ED2 to bucknell) but yea… idk. its a pretty good school but much less prestigious than duke and gtown. i think the thing that attracts people to the school is its location and so it gets A LOT of applicants…especially early action.

why are you comparing these march madness schools

I’d still say duke though, anyday of the week!
nicer atmosphere.

BC is getting a lot better very quickly. It was the ultimate Boston area safety school as recently as like 10 years ago, but when you get over 26,000 applications (which BC did this year), they really tightened up. I know a kid with a 33 ACT who got flat-out rejected EA (not even deferred), so apparently it isn’t that easy to get into. I don’t think they love east coast kids as much as you heard, and that’s definitely not the case for Massachusetts. It’s definitely far above BU.

And combatbaby, it’s not like these three schools aren’t on a lot of seniors’ lists together; I applied to 3 non-Ivy schools and these were the three, and from browsing these boards there’s a lot of overlap between kids that applied to GTown/Duke and GTown/BC

i applied to duke gtown and bc… i got into BC EA to the honors program and rejected by gtown RD in the NHS school. duke i haven’t heard back from yet

When did you hear from Georgetown RD? My son got into BC EA and was deferred EA at Georgetown. Did you just hear?

If I recall, hello32 applied to NHS. Because there are only a few applicants to NHS (500 total), they get their results earlier.

ok I must set the record straight! BC a safety school, are you kidding me? I know at least 5 or 6 kids that applied between last year and this and ONE got in! His SAT scores combined were about 2300. Two of the others hovered around 2250 and were rejected, flat out. One of them got into BROWN and not BC! BC is a tough school, period and to say its a joke is in itself a joke, this is a very hard school to get into. I grew up in Conn and now live in NY and I can tell you by all calibers of sutdents this is a VERY HIGHLY regarded school, as is BU but not on the same level. So there!

I definitely agree with nymom. 26,000 applicants with an acceptance rate of 29% is nothing to scoff at.

something to further my point…my sons very good lacrosse friend who was an all star athelete, in the top 20% of his very competitive class, about 2250 for ssat’s got rejected today from BC. He is quite upset and his parents are quite surprised, he has two relatives that went there, however he got into Duke, Univ.SC Chapel Hill, Oberlin, Indiana Kelley school of buiness and UCLA. BC IS A TOUGH SCHOOL TO GET INTO.
