I’m applying to Trinity for Mathematics. The website says all this stuff about “Access and flexibility” and navigating the course in 50 ways. Is this stuff true how flexible is Trinity? I’m planning to write on how flexible Duke is and how it allows me to explore opportunities in my essay for why Trinity… Thanks!

@stripedpanda: Trinity’s academics are very flexible. This is fundamental and factual (for example, 50 percent of Duke undergraduates participate in faculty mentored/guided research) . . . it’s not a marketing tool or a meaningless academic cliché. I would offer two important examples for potential essay use:
- Undergraduate research opportunities, which often include multidisciplinary faculty, post-Docs, graduate students, and even freshmen. The real key is “horizontal intellectual integration” across several academic disciplines, which sadly is remains infrequent in many other fine academic communities. http://undergraduateresearch.duke.edu
- The Interdepartmental Major, which allows one to design his own academic concentrations and provides each undergraduate with the opportunity to create an in-depth program of studies that optimally suits his goals and desires. http://trinity.duke.edu/undergraduate/academic-policies/interdepartmental-major

Obviously, these initiatives are only the “tip of the iceberg” (international study, Duke Engage, Focus, and much more) at Duke; however, I understand the essay word-constraints and I suspect you’ll want to concentrate on a limited number of programs (while at least acknowledging others).

The foregoing URLs will lead you to far greater and more detailed information.

I wish you good luck (and I believe you’ve selected a good essay topic).

@toptier thanks that was really helpful! :)

@stripedpanda: You’re most welcome.
