Dumb Questions People Asked You This Week

We were sitting around with my DD’s friends watching the Benjamin Button movie. One of her friends asked (sincerely) whether the movie was based on a true story.

“I have a $35 copay. How much will I have to pay?”

My daughter had a meeting with her high school guidance counselor so that she could add a class, Creative Writing, to her schedule.

Guidance counselor: “You do realize that this class requires a lot of writing?”

My daughter (who just couldn’t resist): “Really? And do we need to be creative, too?”

I love this one. Imagine somebody watching that story who really didn’t know how it turns out.

One thing–did they tell her yes or no?

Hunt, I think they just gave her a dumbfounded look and said, “Um, no, he doesn’t get away.”

My sister once asked me “What is the difference between pants and shorts?”

She was actually wondering about the taper of the legs and whether you could just cut off long pants to make shorts but still…duh.

From my friend’s rather dimbulb fiance:

You know that island off the coast of Canada?
Me: Newfoundland?
Her: No, that’s not it.
Me: Prince Edward? Cape Breton? Baffin???
Her: No, the one with the Queen …

Things have not improved since your mom’s experiences. Our eponymous state magazine runs a monthly column called “One of Our 50 is Missing” about stories people have experienced trying to explain to people that New Mexico is actually part of the US.

~~~~~
Now the my favorite dumb question:
My daughters have different coloring–one is pale blonde, green-eyed with fair skin; the other is brunette, brown-eyed with an olive complexion. One is a toothpick; the other is curvy. But they have clear facial similiarities and they actually look quite alike in the face. (Same parents, just an interest roll of the genetic dice. One kiddo got all the family recessives; the other didn’t.)
One D was introducing her sister to a group of her friends–
Older daughter: “And this is my sister…”
Friend: "You’re kidding, right? Who is she really?
Took nearly all evening to convince Older D’s friends she wasn’t pulling a practical joke.
I work for a law firm. One of my co-workers asked “what does adverse mean.”
This reminds me of when our kids went on a trip together. Some of the folks they met were convinced they were BF/GF while the others could easily tell they were sibs.
Also reminds me of power outages where cashiers can’t make change because they need the register to tell them what change is due. Sad. :(
I haven’t seen King of Kings, but in most movie versions of that story, he does get away…a few days later.
Friend: “Who are the Beatles?”
^^^^^“Wait, you mean that Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings?”
I asked this once when ordering pizza and my husband pointed out how stupid I sounded:
“Are your mushrooms real?” (I meant fresh vs canned)
True, Hunt. ;)
A couple from my kids:
8yo watching The Hobbit, about halfway through the movie, leaned over and whispered,in a very concerned tone, “Mom–What happened to Sam?”
10yo “Wait. . .What? Michael Jackson was BLACK?!? I’ve never seen him that way!”
D’s 11yo friend–looking at the teacher’s evaluation of her class presentation, “She said, ‘Good thinking on your feet.’ Does that mean she liked my nice shoes?”
S likes to get a strap of $2 bills at the bank and use them in stores and restaurants. He gets a lot of interesting reactions. People think they are worth more or really rare or not even real money. We went to lunch and the cashier was really excited to get a $2 - “wow, you just made my day!” S just grins :).
Sometimes people tell you they’re counterfeit. Not always easy to get a lot of $2 bills.
There was a recall on a stove which resides at our cabin.
Conversation with customer service who wants to arrange a repair visit…
Me: well, I’m not next to the appliance at the moment, can we arrange for the tech to come next week.
Them: I need you to check the stove right now to see if it’s turned itself on automatically.
Me; I am not at the stove right now.
Them: At anytime when you were not present did the stove turn on automatically by itself.
Me; I don’t know, let’s call and ask it.
Them: Your appliance doesn’t have a remote access feature.
Me: speechless…
I have very curly hair. I am constantly asked variations on the theme:
“Who does your perm?” Me: “God.”
“Is that a perm?” Me: “Yes. Very.”
My daughter was born with curls as well (which was a good thing, since my husband also has curly hair . . . ). She was about 2, and we were in a public restroom when a complete stranger came up to me and started berating me about subjecting my daughter to a perm just so she could look like me! Um . . . .
