Duquesne Class of 2028 Questions

My D24 was accepted into the Integrated Marketing Communications program for the fall. We live about 6 hours away and will be visiting in a couple weeks. We don’t know a ton about the school and I am interested if anyone has any thoughts. Pittsburgh seems like a great city and the location seems amazing for a campus.

They give great merit, making it a real player for my daughter. Her other top choices are Manhattan (her sister goes there so we know a ton) and Temple.

Thanks!

My S24 was also accepted at Duquesne and after visiting, it is his #1 school. It’s a self contained campus in the middle of downtown Pittsburgh. Great location! Seems like a wonderful community - more tight knit than larger schools. We are about 5 hrs away from Pittsburgh. I think it’s a great school!

I also have a daughter at Temple. She loves it. It scares me a bit given the crime rate, but Temple has worked REALLY hard on safety on campus and in the “safety zone” around the school.
Good luck!

Thank you! We are actually heading out tomorrow for a visit/tour on Friday! I think the major is a great match for her but looking forward to learning more.

We love Duquesne. I have two sisters who went there, and some nephews and nieces their now. I have twin boys, both seniors, recently accepted. One undecided, the other for their brand-new mechanical engineering program. They are also adding a med school, so the school is really booming. D1 sports are cool, too. It’s not Pitt or Penn State, but the facilities are great. My nephew spent most of the fall going to $1 Pirate games. The subway, which has a stop on campus, drops you off at PNC Park. The Penguins arena is adjacent to the campus. The school rocketed up my kids’ list after we visited. Also, if you are Catholic they have a great chapel right on campus, with near constant access to Mass and the sacraments.

Thank you! This is great to hear. I am really looking forward to our visit!

@u2kelly, how did it go?

It was great! Really loved how it is a true campus while also in a big city. We were able to see dorms, dining hall and walked around the academic buildings. Also went in the student union and to the admissions office. So we did get around the entire campus. My daughter also really liked it, but is just not sure about the distance from home. This would be 6 hours where as most of her other schools are within 2.5 hours. I do think it has moved up the list though for sure now that she has seen it. I loved it! I do think it is the best fit right now based on the major and size of school, but I am just mom - lol! We did also look at Pitt when we were there and she did not like that it did not have a self-contained campus. So we were also able to take a school off the final list.

My son was recently admitted. We did an East Coast tour of schools, but didn’t hit Duquesne; so, not at the top of his list. Nice to hear your thoughts on the setting. He liked the urban setting of Boston U and Marquette, but not really Drexel or St John’s setting.

How long did it tale to hear back from Duquesne? My daughter applied at the very end of October and we haven’t heard back yet. Did the notification appear when you first open the portal?

He applied maybe a day or two before the early action deadline of 11/15. He was notified via text (and/or email) to check his portal on 11/24. I don’t have access to his portal, so not sure how it was presented to him there.

My kids heard back pretty quickly. Maybe a few weeks? But they were not going for the super crowded programs like, say, pharmacy and nursing.

I think it was about 2 weeks. Applied 10/15. But like others have said, it was for a liberal arts program and not one of the more competitive ones like nursing or PA.

91’ Alum here. Duquesne is a great school. Duquesne provides a solid education and is a cozy little campus. Beautfiul chapel right on campus.

The campus is off in a litle corner of the city BUT the immediate surrounding streets and area are not to be navigated alone. The school will tell you this. Downtown Pittsburgh is like any city now, very unpredictable. Shootout at the downtown Arby’s just yesterday afternoon.

Our daughter was a recruited athlete and was admitted into the SoSe college at Duquesne, honors program, and pre-professional program. We came away from a meeting with faculty really impressed with the available options in her major and their dedication to their students. It was clear they care immensely. That combined with a smallish, faith centered campus checks many boxes. The only unchecked box is location, which is a long way from home and will mean big adjustments for all. Praying her new teammates can become her family away from home.

Daughter was accepted to the PA program yesterday! Really thrilled as she did not visit or interact with he AO as it’s on the other side of the state from us, but it’s recently become more attractive. Especially since my daughter has been leaning more toward going to school in a more urban area as opposed to the other more rural options she has, which she thinks will provide good opportunities for rotations. Apparently there were over 500 applications for 42 spots. So now we’re trying to learn as much as possible about it. Anyone else get into the PA program?

I just wanted to let you know that a great friend of mine went there years ago in the PA program. She is the one that introduced us to Duquesne! (we are in NJ). I have only heard amazing things about the program. Congrats to your daughter!!

Thank you so much for that response! I really appreciate it. We are now scrambling to find a time to visit but unfortunately, because of the holidays, they don’t have much available before the 1/31 deadline to secure her spot. It’s pretty far away for us, too, so we can’t just pop on over and check it out!

If you scroll up you can see that we went to visit about a month ago. It is a 6 hour drive for us. I really loved the campus and Pittsburgh is a great city. My daughter really liked it too but it is just a little too far for her comfort level right now. Definitely try to get there - even if just to drive around the campus and area. You will at least get some feel for the size and layout that way. Good luck!

I live in the Pittsburgh suburbs and visited Duquense. Happy to answer any questions you may have.

The program is extremely well regarded and has been for years. It attracts very high-level students. Duquesne has always been known for health sciences, especially its pharmacy program. When I was a kid Duquesne pharmacy was set apart because it was direct admit, whereas Pitt brought kids in and made them apply to the pharm program as upper classmen, so it was a different process. (Pitt has a great program as well. It was just different.) Duquesne’s proximity to Mercy, and its affiliation with UPMC, is a huge selling point, and their new medical school identifies them as a school on the rise.

All of which explains why 500 kids applied for 42 spots.

Not saying it’s the best school for everybody. No place is. But it’s a great program.
