Durban teen heads to Harvard
December 17, 2005, 19:00

"An 18-year-old Durban pupil has been accepted into the prestigious Harvard University in the United States. Entry as an undergraduate scholar at the university is reserved for a select few.

Scott is a natural when it comes to maths and science. He does not spend much time pouring over the books - instead he enjoys touching base with friends he made while travelling overseas after winning the National Science Olympiad.

The admission process over the past two years has meant a series of interviews and tests that Scott passed with flying colours. Scott says he is ready for the challenge starting in September and determined to make his family and his country proud."

I hope not - the pages will get soggy. Instead he should be poring over the books.

hehehe. That made me laugh :p

Cool article, though. Guess Harvard isn’t a very common thing down there so that’s pretty great!

Dont you just love how they take foreign nationals over their own people?

Because everyone knows no foreigner deserves to get into Harvard?

I live in South Africa. Thanx GuitarMan, btw.
Anyway, what exactly do they mean by “a series of interviews”? There are no interviewers in SA.

harvard usually takes the smartest kids in a country.
they have high scores and they add to the diversity.

URMs just add to the diversity  jk
common now. quit fuming. learn to accept things in life.
am i being preachy??
maybe i am. but it is for your good.
:)

“Dont you just love how they take foreign nationals over their own people?”

Why would they want to take you when in the past few days you have shown yourself in the worst light possible? Why do you feel so entitled over everyone else? I understand that you are disappointed, but you are handling this in the exact wrong way – Harvard doesn’t have space for students who take a small setback so badly.

Actually, I do. I’m very grateful for the opportunity I had at Harvard to become close friends with people from Turkey, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Russia as well as Southern California, Boston, and the Upper East Side. It was almost like studying abroad in ten different countries without ever leaving home.

Honestly, international students are usually the most interesting students at Harvard. I believe that’s why Harvard is increasing the undergraduate enrollment within a few years in order to admit more international students.

I’m part of the host family program and get to meet all sorts of international students, and even a few students from obscure states in the US. Trust me, these people deserve to get in. They’re the elite of their countries and they bring something that nobody else can.
