DUS Worth it?

Gonna be applying soon, but since I am 100% sure what I want to do would DUS be worth it just for increased chances? I have a 4.0 GPA W and a 1210 SAT…

What major would you be applying to if not DUS? The acceptance rates are very different for different majors.

There are no direct admits at Penn State so there’s no advantage to getting in DUS vs. for a major.
However there may not be an advantage depending on what college or major you’re applying for.

In order to get into the smeal business school, you need to either be direct admit or be in dus. Can’t transfer from other colleges.

There are no direct admits (where you are in no matter what the way Michigan Ross or Indiana Kelley do). Only pre admits - whether admitted with an intention of majoring at Smeal or as DUS, you have to take the same classes, get the same grades, pass through the same traps and hoops.
For Smeal, the best option is applying DUS, because pre admits have no advantages whatsoever and only 10% of those who declare they want Smeal on their application get in as such, 90% have to ask for reconsideration as DUS, so skip the middle step.

@jlhpsu I would be applying to Eberly College of Science, Immunology and Infection diseases

^isn"t that a graduate program?
Not sure for Eberly, I’d say your odds are 60-40.

I believe this major is in the College of Agriculture rather than Eberly.

Sorry, I was deciding between this and Pre Med

On their website they label it as an undergrad major… It is in College of Agriculture though.

If in college of agriculture then you don’t need to apply DUS.
Avoid the “premed major.”
If you’re interested in going to med school, you must show that you have the ability to handle premed pre-reqs AND a real major (which can be anything from Biostatistics to French Studies to Anthropology to Economics to IST&Technology in Society.) “Premed majors” are for students who can’t handle both and their admission rate to med school is the lowest.

Alright thanks, so do you think going as a biology major at Eberly would lower my chances

Yes. I’d apply DUS rather than Eberly. But college of agriculture would give you an edge .
Look at the way your schedule would look:

The best preparation for this major would be AP bio (to preview Bio 110), AP chem (to preview Chem 110), Ap calculus AB-BC (to skip 140 to 141) , AP English Language (to skip English 15) to allow you to have first and second semesters at 15 credits.

Do you by chance know what the acceptance rates for IT are? I just recently posted a thread with my stats and if you could take a look at it and give your opinion on whether I should stick with that major on my application or put DUS id very much appreciate it.

Can you copy the link to your thread?

Son was considering that. He is in DUS. It’s undergrad and in ag sci. Lots of chem. He is taking Mech of disease and chem 110. Rough time with chem and since there is lots of chem he is considering a backup plan. Just a little insight.
