Anyone else with a particularly good recipe for dutch ovens?

My dutch oven arrived in the mail today, so now I need to use it. Oh, and DH surprised me with another one in a different size so now I have 2 of them! The best part is that this forced me to clean out a shelf to make room for my 2 new additions!

I made the mistake of ordering the Calphalon dutch oven from J&R (the $39 deal mentioned a few pages back.) I figured it’s made in the USA, like my other Calphalon. Well, the pot was made here but the lid was made in China. It’s not worth paying return shipping (& likely a restocking fee) to send it back, so dh suggested we throw out the lid and use it with an old one (actually, he first suggested covering it with foil.) Oh well.

I hope our Costco will still have their version of the Le Creuset after the holidays. If not, maybe I’ll put the real thing on my wish list for next birthday.

Tried the Rosemary Chicken recipe and it was yummy and easy. Only down side–it was BLAZING hot! Did I put a tablespoon of red pepper flakes in instead of a teaspoon? I don’t know–but when I make it again, I’m going to omit the red pepper flakes entirely.

^^I made this for dinner tonight too! It is strange that your dish turned out hot. Mine did not turn out spicy at all and I used the red pepper flakes.

I’ve been lusting over these enameled dutch ovens for years, but I always ask myself why I need one when I have (and use) my crock pot all the time for braised dishes. I noticed that T.J. Maxx also had an impressive selection of them in early November, and I petted them longingly. But, they’re a chunk of change, even at T.J.'s. I like the ones with the white enamel interiors. I’ve noticed that the one at Costco has a black/dark grey one, which I find off-putting.

Can someone explain why I need these dutch ovens as well as my 5qt. crock pot?

^^ I have a crock pot as well as a Dutch oven, but I use my Dutch oven more because I can brown the meat in the Dutch oven and then add the rest of the ingredients. With the crock pot I have to use an additional pan to first brown the meat on the stove top and then put the meat and rest of the ingredients in the crock pot.

That’s why I don’t use my crock pot very often. I have found, maybe, oh, one “recipe” I’ll “throw” in my crock pot. The rest of the time it’s used for keeping soups warm.

Revising this thread because I received a Dutch Oven for Christmas and have no idea what to make with it. Can anyone please share recipes? We are planning a dinner party in a little bit and would like to cook Mexican food – I usually do chicken or pork adobo with black beans in the slow cooker.

I am resurrecting this discussion because I need, crave, and must have a new Dutch oven and could use your advice. I have a much-loved Le Creuset braiser that has served me well but I am now jonesing for a Dutch Oven to bake bread. I am not finding LC on sale right now (I notice several posters from back in November said LC was on sale–perhaps that is the month I must wait for?) and I was coveting the wonderfully reviewed 5.5 quart Kirkland (made in France) which is, I believe… alas… not currently in stock.

Do you happen to live anywhere near a Le Creuset Outlet center? I buy the ones they put on seconds’ shelf in the back of the store. The imperfections are as slight as a bubble in the paint on the lid. Since the thing weighs so much, I store it in the basement so it is not on display. The savings are significant—perhaps half off retail. The outlet store offers a special promo on a different color each month and then also runs periodic sales, in case you do not want to purchase the imperfect ones.

They may offer charge/send, but the things weigh so much that I am guessing shipping would be expensive. I have the 13 liter and it is very heavy.

Actually the ones at Macy’s are a bit lighter in heft but I am told folks are happy with them and their prices are SUBSTANTIALLY lower. I bought a few at the holidays but H made me return as way too heavy for our use.

Thanks CT. I just called the factory outlet store nearest us and found a pretty good price. Somehow, I always thought outlets were not really such a great deal, but they have the 5.5 qt size in a discontinued color that I love (aubergine) and it was marked way down. Sweet! I’m ready to pull the trigger, but always welcome any new info.

I got Denby dishes earlier this year and I love them. I also received a gift from the place that sells seconds, and nobody I’ve shown them to can figure out what’s wrong with the dishes from there. I have a Le Crueset lasagna pan that’s about 30 years old and it’s still in great shape.
