DVD-R transfer question

I have several DVD-R discs that I recorded a high school musical on, that D2 was in four years ago.

A couple of years ago, I purchased a new digital recorder after the old one began to have some issues. I dropped the old one off at electronics recycling several months ago.

A couple of weeks ago, one of the girls that had been in the musical got in touch with me and was wanting the DVD-R discs and was going to take them somewhere and have a copy made for herself and another cast member. She picked up the discs and was on a mission. I just got a message from her saying this:

We took them to two different people who both said they need the camera and cords to be able to read the CDs. I think it has something to do with the videos not being finalized. Would it be possible for you to finalize them if I return them to you? I think that would solve the problem.

I am heading out of town tomorrow for a couple of weeks and told her I’d check into it when I got back. When I do get back, anyone have any ideas about how I might be able remedy this situation?

Yikes. From this, it sounds like it is a job for a pro:

This was mentioned to me as a program that can help to retrieve the information from unfinalized DVDs, but I have no first-hand experience with it:

Apparently, you can download a trial version and see if it can read the data on your disks. If it does, then you have the option to pay the license fee to get the full version of the software. CNET reviews seem to be mostly positive:

Very cool BB; thanks for researching this for me! I know there’s got to be some technology out there, but finding the right place/piece of equipment and/or person to do it is the question.

Teri, thanks! It was fun. I suspect that there are a few unfinalized DVDs in our collection, too! We still have the recorder, but if it croaks… You will be an expert in this by then! ;)

Haha… one could hope. I forwarded the information to our daughter’s friend, and if she wants to tackle it while I’m away, she’s free to do so!

I didn’t dare get into the hows and whys of where I was able to get this information. Don’t want her to think I’m sending out information about her on the internet… I don’t think she’d get CC.
