DVR vs. Live TV

Thanks to DVR I can hardly stand to watch live TV anymore! At the very least, we DVR shows and don’t start them till 10 or 15 mins in so we can buzz through commercials.

Gets a little tricky for reality show watching cause you have to be careful listening to the radio, surfing the web etc. that you don’t hear/see what happened, but wow, DVR has made my viewing a much more pleasant experience!

I know advertisers don’t like it, but I am thrilled not to view commercials!

Has DVR changed your tv viewing? Do you think you watch more tv or less tv because of it?

I only watch through Hulu or Netflix- so yes, I do like watching when I want, instead of when scheduled. Hulu does have short commercials, but they are much shorter than the ones on TV.

I watch more TV since I can schedule it to my time, otherwise I wouldn’t watch any at all.

I go on my elliptical or treadmill most days of the week for 30 min - hr. I use the dvr to record shows that don’t require too much brainpower from me that the rest of the family can’t stand.

We hardly watch any shows live anymore.

I didn’t even watch the SuperBowl live – although I did time it so that I would be caught up to live by the end of the game. I NEVER — and I mean NEVER – watch live TV. I even record the nightly news so I can skip through the commercials while I’m cooking.

Unless it’s a game I’m particularly interested in, I use a technique I call “speed football”. The 30 second skip button on my DVR is usually perfect to jump from the end of one play to the beginning of the next, thus cutting out not only the commercials but the annoying commentators. I can watch a whole game in about 45 minutes to an hour.

Same thing when I used to watch American Idol. Just skip the judges’ commentary… :)

TV is plain boring and getting worse. Most of my semi-favorite shows (never had anything favorite on TV) dissapear one afte another, TV is just on whenever I do something else and when I need to fall asleep (it does this job very well). We rent movies but most of them are also very boring and simply empty, nothing. Not much entertainment. I am happy that we have a very nice museum in our city, I love to go there and I have a great H and very nice hobby, otherwise I would be depressed for the lack of entertainment after work and gym.

There are 2 shows on Comedy Central that we tape every night and watch on the DVR the next day. The commercials, along with 99% of the other shows on that network are so atrocious I couldn’t bear to watch it otherwise. Fast forwarding through the commercials is a great thing.

I watch local news, national news, then Jeopardy from 6 to 7:30 every night. I’m usually at the gym after work so I DVR these 3 every day. Ninety minutes of TV usually takes me about 45 minutes to watch. When you’re zipping through the commercials you realize just how many there are. At least a dozen before the final Jeopardy question…I love DVR. It’s like EZ Pass–can’t live without it.
