Hi,
I am just helping a friend out. Here’s the current situation:
He is a senior in high school and he’s very much interested in anything digital, more specifically in the field of e-commerce. Can any of you suggest a major that would be useful if he wants to go this route.
Thank you
E-commerce is simply selling things online. Virtually every large company on the planet that sells things has an e-commerce branch of some time. There are a huge number of jobs relevant to that.
You could study English and become a technical writer or communicator for copy on these websites; you could study marketing and learn how to market things on e-commerce websites; you could major in computer science or electrical engineering and become a software engineer and build e-commerce websites; you could major in economics or finance and study financial/economic markets and impacts of e-commerce; you could study legal and intellectual property issues of e-commerce through a political science major; you could study the impact of e-commerce on human society through sociology; you could design art and graphics for an e-commerce company with an art degree…
And even that’s pretty reductionist. You could study linguistics, learn to code, and still be a software engineer for an e-commerce company. Or you could major in computer science and become a technical writer. And so on.
I mean, Amazon - one of the biggest e-commerce presences in the market - has over 250,000 employees. Take a look at the sheer breadth of jobs Amazon hires for. Social marketing manager, business analyst, learning systems strategist, assistant kitchen manager, risk manager…
