E is for embarrassment

This is just hysterical. I could not stop laughing for a few minutes when I read the last pargraph! Here it is:

Has something like that happened to you?

No. This would be a termination infraction at my former workplace. Really.

It would be at a lot of places I have worked too. I am now self employed and we have looked into systems that would track internet usage but I feel torn about it. I don’t want to be an agressive employer but I sure don’t want people surfing the net on company time.
There is also an issue of what you allow in the workplace and sexual harassment. I once worked at a place where an 11pm to 7am employee was fond of using my computer. Found that they were going to internet kiddie porn sites and I was NOT happy. Imagine my conversation with my boss when the images starting showing up at random on my computer.
I basically let him know that this was not acceptable to me at all and that the employee in question needed to be terminated. Then I started locking down my computer with the permission of the employer.

There was a news story a few years back where a substitute teacher was convicted of exposing students to porn at school. She admitted to surfing the net at school, but said that she was looking for hairstyles and a porn site came up and it would not let her click out of it. She said that since she was a sub she was afraid to just pull the plug because she didn’t know what it would do to the computer system.

It blew me away to hear her story (and that she was going to jail because of it!!!) because the same thing had happend to me at work. Fortunately, I am in an office by myself. I was looking at hairstyle sites and clicked on something allegedly about hairstyles and porn came up and a new window opened every half second or so. I kept trying to X out and by then maybe a hundred windows of porn had opened. I tried the off button and it would not shut down. I finally had to crawl under my desk and pull the power plug.

Missypie, that happened to me at home, before I knew about virus protection and firewalls and pop-up blockers and so forth. It was horrible. Window after window kept opening, and I couldn’t click out of them fast enough. It was like I was being attacked!!

I guess we will all have to resort to magazines for those hairstyle ideas.
