EA Class of 2022

@RelocatedYankee what was the major she applied for? She’ll get in somewhere great, she has very good EC’s and stats.

@RelocatedYankee

I wouldn’t give up, as it sounds like RD she will have a great chance. Need very well could have played a role, which is too bad  If she does get in RD, I hope that need is met as expected! Good luck!

Well, here’s a bit of insight for those that were denied…

My son (1570 SAT, 3.9 GPA, varsity captain) learned that 3 other kids he knows with similar stats or better at his school were also denied from NU engineering. His counselor said that that a lot of kids at their school received a similar decision. She suspects it might be that the yield from their school (in Massachusetts) has been extremely low in the preceding years. That, and the very large, competitive pool of applicants this year, were the likely reasons for their unhappy outcome.

There may be a lot going on behind-the-scenes factoring into a denial that might not be obvious- and may be unrelated to an applicant’s qualifications. (Definitely not a failure on their part as a previous post suggested.)

wow @LolliCoomassie that is pretty crazy. They have to think that your kid just wouldn’t enroll with those stats. I mean how much more competitive could some of the applicants be? Was he seeking a lot of need $$ ?

My son from MA with worse stats got in last year to the business school, but I’m convinced it’s because we are full pay and they figured he would likely enroll. A decent # of kids enroll each year and last year they had a record # of applicants from his school.

My younger son19 likes NU a lot, and wants to apply for engineering, but he does not have the SAT score your son has. I really doubt he’ll be accepted after looking at this years EA results so far.

Your son should get into a lot of excellent schools. Good luck.

@veagle18. Thanks for withdrawing your app after being deferred. All of us waiting for RD decisions are grateful.

@Hersheyprincess My son has identical stats to you and got the same merit with no honors(don’t really care about the honors). Northeastern is a good school and I and I can tell from this thread that it could have gone either way in terms of him getting in at all. But honestly, at this point @Hersheyprincess you must have already received much better offers from similar schools? I know we sure have. Again no disrespect to Northeastern, it’s just a little too expensive for what it is. And yes @WilliamNYC we too will decline the offer to make room for others.

@RightCoaster, not high financial need, and our Massachusetts town has a high COL, so most are not likely to have great financial needs either.

We were initially told by his counselor that kids from our school had to demonstrate interest to have a hope of getting in. My son reached out to NU and requested information. We also registered and went to an open house and took a campus tour. In hind-sight, he could have done more to demonstrate interest, but it probably wouldn’t have changed the outcome. Especially keeping in mind how competitive engineering is.

It sounds like your younger son and other kids from his school will be looked on more favorably since you have a good number of applicants that enroll. I honestly can’t blame the colleges for taking this into consideration. With so many kids applying to 15+ colleges, it must be so hard for admissions officers to figure out which students are likely to attend.

Northeastern is clearly playing US News ratings game unfortunately. Bunch of kids with very high stats at my DS school didn’t get in or deferred. They definitely are bent on increasing their yield, which is understandable. They
also play the game of asking low stats kids to attend one semester in Germany/Australia just when ratings folks
show up on campus. They can try to increase their profile by playing these games but, they will only go so far. You have to invest in research, faculty and raise profile among peers not with US News. I would never send my kid there.

@avakaya US News is a small office of people controlling the thoughts and actions of most every selective college in our country along with legions of parents who treat it like it’s gospel. Northeastern is not alone in what you described above. Reminds me of the old phrase “Don’t hate the player, hate the game”. It’s US News that you should be mad at because I promise you none of the schools in the top 100 are any different in their approach(See there I go citing US News  )

@avakaya

Northeastern has done this and a lot more. I take it you have never visited. Do a little research before you make a dismissive judgement.

If deferrals are a way to weed of applicants for whom Northeastern is a safety then it is a good thing. There would be little chance of that student attending. And if they did enroll because they were denied at other schools chances are they would not be a happy camper and would try to transfer up as soon as possible. This would hurt retention and graduation rates.

Those who are truly interested in attending Northeastern, even if it is not their first choice, will wait for the RD decisions in March.

Despite the Northeastern deferral my daughter is going to be just fine. She’s already been accepted to several great schools including Boston College. Bostonians will know what I mean when I say I always thought we were a Northeastern rather than a Boston College kind of family. Last night we unexpectedly fell out on the other side of the wall. Good grief! Next thing I know there will be a Yankees banner flying in my yard

My daughter is in the same position. Very high stats, including 36 ACT. Admitted with Dean’s Scholarship ($20K per year) but no honors college. Pretty shocked, actually.

Hi all. I got accepted with 22k a year/Dean’s scholarship.
34 ACT, 4.0 UW GPA with all AP classes, excellent ECs if I do say so myself.
Can’t complain too much, but I am a little confused about the honors college situation

@misty88981 same situation with my daughter here. With 35 ACT and high GPA, didn’t get into honors but received Dean’s Scholarship. We are little disappointed. I was wondering, what is the criteria to get into Honors? Can students get into Honors next year? Any information regarding Honors is appreciated.

@TomSrOfBoston Thank you very much. I will forward the link to my daughter.

So do they take need into account for merit? As in, they know what the parents EFC is, so they give merit to get down to that number. The merit awards seem all over the place relative to stats. I am just wondering. With a 36 and 3.9 UW gpa, we got $16k and honors. But @misty88981 has a similar stats child who got $20k and no honors. Then there are some who are listing 27-30k/year also. I know that the 16K we got put the total below our EFC, but I also know that EFCs are not necessarily based on reality, at least our reality anyway. And the honors portion, of course, could be major driven more than anything else. It just seems odd that the merit side doesn’t seem to correlate to stats.

hi friends!
im from NY, was admitted with a 33 composite ACT and a 4.0 unweighted gpa. decent ECs freshman and sophomore years but they’re pretty solid this year and last year. 18k a year w dean’s scholarship. super excited :))))

To answer anyone’s question who is wondering, I do not believe NU will reject someone because they need more money. If they want you, they will do everything they can to get you to attend.
If you’re on the bubble, it probably wouldn’t help, but I do not think it would hurt you at all…

I got accepted last night to biomedical engineering, but didn’t show any interest… visited Boston but never NU so I don’t think that was a huge game changer either?-- 35 ACT 4.0 Gpa UW 4.7 W, many EC’s, athlete, class president, etc…

I got deferred from my top school earlier this year, and it has made me really reconsider where I want to go… So take it with a grain of salt and really keep your options open because I’ve been surprised by how many amazing opportunities there are for me at other schools, where I probably could succeed more and have more opportunities.

Just keep your options open and if you got rejected then it didn’t happen because NEU wasn’t your perfect fit.
Good luck to all.

Hi everyone! Anyone else receive this acceptance letter?
