EA Class of 2022

^ people with 4.0s and 34+ didn’t get honors

@User1555 in the past selection for honors is by college. So the CSSH applicant may get honors, the COE applicant may not even though their stats are the same.

@tt8082 thanks for the words of encouragement though I’m not sure what failure you are referring to nor what the silver lining of a deferral is…

International Applicant

Accepted!
SAT: 1290
IB student: Predicted grade around a 35, not including the extra points
EC: Many extracurriculars (basically relied on this knowing I had a bad SAT) - Student government president, volunteer activities, debate, 3 varsity sports teams, clothing brand, cheer, dance, etc…
Had a good relationship with my teacher and counselor recs.

Honestly a little shocked I got accepted given the low SAT score but nonetheless very happy!

Goodluck to everyone!

Curious to know @bluesclues2022, what country are you from? Congrats with your admission!

@bluesclues2022 Northeastern does not consider SAT/ACT scores for international students even if submitted.

@WilliamNYC the failure part was more for those who may have been rejected. I know when I was rejected from Stanford, I felt like a failure. And who knows, you may find your silver lining from a deferral by realizing there’s better schools out there for you

@WilliamNYC

Indonesia!

However, I do go to an International school and actually grew up in California. I’ve been studying in Indonesia for the past 9 years.

Thank you so much!

Ohh I see. Thank you for the information! @TomSrOfBoston

i got deferred with a 4.58 WGPA and 1520 SAT. Accepted to Notre Dame and BC though so i don’t really get this. Withdrew my app anyway.

My D was accepted EA to Honors college with 3.99 UW, 4.86 W, 34 ACT, 11 APs, lots of ECs and leadership.

@veahle18 Had you been accepted would you have attended Northeastern? Sounds like you wanted ND or BC and Northeastern was your “safety”. . That is one reason for deferral of some high stat applicants.

**Decision: Accepted **

Objective:

ACT (breakdown): Two sittings, 33, 34
ACT superscore (breakdown): 35 (35’s across the board)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.1 out of 4.3 (no true UW GPA)
Weighted GPA: 4.65 (W + AP/Honors bonus)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top 7%, but I don’t know if school discloses that
AP (place score in parentheses): Bio(5), Lang(4), Physics 1(3), (did not self report scores)

Senior Year Course Load:

Math 2 AP credits (AP Stats, AP Calc AB)

Principles of Accounting
English: Science Fiction
PE: Outdoor Adventure and Games (best gym class ever!)
Personal Finance

Number of other EA applicants in your school:
No idea

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel, etc.):
None

Common Awards (AP Scholar, honor roll, NM things, etc.):
National Merit Commended Student
School Citizenship/Academic Award, 4 years
Tri-M, Music Honor Society, 4 years
NHS - 1 year

Did not report: Honor Roll every term, AP Scholar

4 years high school hockey
Off season rec hockey teams and camps

Jobs - hockey referee one year, worked at Target for 6 months

Community service - nothing huge (around 20 hours/year), various types of service within the school and surrounding community. He did the usual volunteering at high school concessions, food banks, etc, but I think something that was interesting about him was that he was able to combine his music (Drumline 1) with community service - performing at Make A Wish fundraisers, welcoming veterans as they return home from Honor Flights, Performing at the school to welcome teachers back for the new year and welcoming incoming freshmen, performing at elementary schools to help grow the music program, etc.

[ b]Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):**

Essays:
Common App Essay - well written, but cliche.

Teacher Recommendation #1:
Teacher Recommendation #2:

I assume both teacher recommendations are very good. His CS teacher has had him all four years for CS and one math class. Knows him very well and loves him. He and his AP Physics teacher have the same personality/sense of humor, so they clicked, and he performed very well in the class.

Counselor Rec:
Probably good, but nothing too personal since he only saw her once or twice a year to discuss course selection.

Interview:
No interview

Other

Date Submitted App: November 1
U.S. State/Territory or Country: Wisconsin
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket Range:
Hooks: No hooks, small geographic hook?

Reflection

Strengths: High stats, overall well rounded and dedicated person
Weaknesses: No leadership positions

Why you think he was accepted:
High Stats. Well rounded, but did not join a million clubs to have lot’s a EC’s. Four year dedication to 2 areas of interest (music, sports). One of his jobs related to his sports interest, much of his community service related to his music interest. Did not take every AP available just to take AP classes. Took the ones he had genuine interest in and excelled in those classes.

What would you have done differently?:
Encouraged (forced, lol) him to study for the PSAT so he could become a NM Semifinalist/Finalist. Maybe that would be what pushed him over the edge for Honors and more merit aid.

Where else did you apply?

Boston University RD

General Comments & Advice:

@TomSrOfBoston - you obviously are in the loop and have shared a lot of valuable information. We thank you for that.

My son is from a competitive Mass high school and was Deferred. He has 1370 SAT and 3.6 UW-GPA and very strong ECs, etc. So, Northeastern is a stretch.

My question is whether or not a school like Northeastern will defer someone when they have a higher financial need. Our need isn’t huge but without Merit he most likely wouldn’t have been able to attend unless they gave him a fair amount in financial aid (grants, etc.)

When they have a kid that isn’t off the charts with scores/GPA, are they more likely to Defer/Reject if the financial need is high?

Thanks.

@TomSrOfBoston How does any admissions committee know if a student considers Northeastern as a safety school?

They do not know where else a student has applied.

My son (thankfully admitted!) is a high stat applicant. NEU was his number one school, and he only applied to two schools (NEU and Boston University). He was planning on applying to our state flagship if he didn’t get into NEU, though.

@2022kid I have no real “insider” information. I am an alumnus and have followed these threads for several years. Northeastern is need aware so a low stat/high need applicant may be denied. Your son’s stats are not what I would consider low so high need should not be a factor in the admission decision.

@TomSrOfBoston - well, inside or not, you definitely have great knowledge and help a lot of folks here.
Thanks for the reply. I didn’t consider my son low on stats until I saw all the other folks stats that got Deferred! Gone are the days of Northeastern being a commuter’s, safety school!

@2022kid fyi, similar situation as you last year. All of my son’s friend group with similar stats/locale were deferred EA and then accepted RD. None of them got any merit. Good luck to your son.

Daughter was deferred as well. 1480 SAT. 3.98 UW-GPA, 8 APs, three sport varsity athlete, employed year round. Northeastern legacy. She does have financial need however and we were worried that would negatively impact her application. She’s done well at the need blind schools, but the Northeastern outcome is too bad. Minus the price tag Northeastern was a great fit. Not easy to find the school that is both an academic and a financial match

Honors and scholarships are two separate criteria / awards, roughly the top 10% and top 25% respectively. Given that the high end of middle 50% is 34 ACT/1500 SAT/4.4W GPA, the decisions seem pretty in line with usual despite the high profile. I think given Northeastern’s recent changes, old Naviance data can also be a factor in the surprised expectations, which is seen every year with these threads. As mentioned, honors is done by college as well it seems.

I think so, as many top applicants who get into preferred schools will withdraw, likely increasing the net yield rate of the group, which Northeastern will prefer. It also is still minimally showing interest, or that you did not apply SCEA somewhere.
