@ewkb296

Northeastern CS and UMass CS are actually pretty close - many rankings are primarily based on grad research reputation of the past or even old opinions if you look at USNews.

http://csrankings.org/#/fromyear/2007/toyear/2018/index?all

Looking here and even moving around options shows they are pretty similar in research these days.

In addition to co-op’s, the program is also pretty unique in its teaching approach, which you can read up on here:

http://felleisen.org/matthias/Thoughts/Developing_Developers.html

They are both great options for CS, so congrats! You really can’t go wrong between them. I would focus on fit here a lot.

Thanks @TomSrOfBoston! Any idea on standard test score range EA vs RD acceptances?

Hey all - current student here - congrats to all accepted and don’t lose hope those deferred! For those rejected, know that admission to one school reflects on the school’s admissions process, not you. Good luck at all your other schools!

Some notes from going through the thread:

First, as mentioned, a deferral is not a rejection, and people can even get merit/honors after being deferred. Northeastern usually defers a lot of people given how big the applicant pool is, usually being bigger than RD.

This year seems pretty in line with other years. Admission within the northeast region is usually pretty brutal, again particularly in EA. That is also probably where yield protection comes into play the most, since it’s likely just another application for many in the region who see it as a good local school to have in their back pocket and perhaps not a top option.

What also should be noted is that if you look through the thread, stats is certainly not everything. Admissions is a bit of a black box, and there’s some level of yield protection, but particularly in EA, I’ve seen that they tend to accept people all over the place based on far more than stats, and then RD becomes a bit more predictable based on stats.

As far as Honors, while it may feel like a nice ego boost / bruise, honors programs vary widely between colleges. At Northeastern, it’s primarily a few housing perks and a few smaller classes in the first year or so. I would not put too much stock into not getting into honors.

Feel free to mention me in any reply and I’d be happy to answer any questions!

Strengths: GPA and personal essay, extracurriculars, teacher rec and summer enrichment
Weaknesses: SAT essay
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I expressed great interest and overall I feel I was a well-rounded applicant.
What would you have done differently?: Try for a better SAT essay or improve SAT score
Where else did you apply? Northeastern, BU, NYU, GW

Other Factors: Visited campus and attended info. session.

General Comments & Advice:
Try to get good SAT and show personality in your essay. Also, I feel like my summer enrichment helped me a lot.

Goodluck to everyone applying in the future.

is there any real advantage of being a deferred applicant in the RD pool?

@abc201822 Send a really good letter of continued interest. Should help

@PengsPhils Thank you for the info regarding Honors Program at Northeastern

Typically there’s no advantage having applied EA vs RD @abc201822. As posted above a really nice ‘continued interest’ letter to admissions office could help and is something that schools typically add to your file. That’s what another selective school my daughter applied to last year confirmed after she sent a similar email. In her case unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to get accepted. YMVV.

@WilliamNYC Northeastern has never broken down those stats between EA and RD.

Deferred EA?

GPA 4.0/4.97
ACT 35
SAT 1550 superscored…1540 highest single test
14 AP’s at graduation…so far, all 4’s and 5’s
Nat’l Merit SemiFinalist
NHS president, Band VP
Essay about chronic illness and obstacles overcome
Teacher Recs should be very strong

Did not show any demonstrated interest. Was that driving factor?

idk if this is helpful for anyone but I was accepted last night and here are my stats!

1540 SAT, 93.1/100 GPA (we don’t do 4.0 scale)
we also got rid of AP classes so I took 3 APs last year but now they are not offered at my school so I’m in all honors classes this year. applied as a Sociology major. Hope this is helpful and good luck to everyone!

i got deferred - 94.66 w gpa and 1550 sat score. was so sure i would get in bc naviance shows that everyone with same/similar statistics as mine got in. idk hopefully rd will be better

Hey, RD applicant here… congrats to all those admitted. To those rejected or deferred, I understand that feeling. Quite often we learn a lot from our failures and there’s always a silver lining.

I was accepted last night with a 20k/ year dean’s scholarship… wonder why I didn’t get into the honors college. Oh well. 34 ACT, 1500 SAT, 96 GPA, lots of music and the arts, lots of volunteering, research, not much leaderships, Common App Essay was a 8/10. Good rec letters… good luck to everyone who was deferred or applied RD!

Just to give you guys an idea for those who got deferred, I’m not sure ho they calculate merit or Honors’s. I got 18k merit and honors program with a 32 10APs and a 3.8 GPA but some people with 35s and 4.0s got in, it leads me to believe even merkt and honors may have been holistic. I also saw some others with stats similar to me with merit and honors. And I also heard people who got deferred still got merit and honors if that helps. I think it’s important to remember the early group is usually much more competitive in terms of stats so the regular field may make it easier to stand out, but who really knows.
