@TomSrOfBoston Perhaps I phrased it wrong. Let’s say NU is a school I really want to go to, but what the hell, I’ll throw apps at HYP for kicks, knowing I probably won’t get in. That doesn’t mean I’m necessarily pining to get into those schools. I just think it’s a bit much for AO to now be student mind readers.
@vhsdad That’s why Northeastern considers "showing interest’. That would be particularly relevant for applicants with tip top stats.
I know one kid with tip top stats that got in EA yesterday and showed zero interest. From prior posts, it seems like “Tufts Syndrome” might depend on what part of the country you are from.

Volunteer/Community Service:
Summer Experience: Got a 610 in the math section of the old SAT in grade 6 and was selected in the Duke Tip program for academically gifted kids
Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Essays: Was about my love for cooking and how it has encouraged me to become a more independent person. I’m really passionate about this subject, and so it was easier for me to write and I actually liked my essay a bit. My counselor said that it was very beautiful. 7/10
Teacher Recommendation #1: Teacher who knew me pretty well and has 30+ years of teaching and headmaster experience, making her pretty well-respected within the academic community. She knew both my strengths and weaknesses, which probably helped her write a well-rounded letter. She taught me US history junior year
Teacher Recommendation #2: Math teacher junior year, in one semester I went from a 78 to a 90 without any test corrections, which hopefully she conveyed in my letter
Counselor Rec: I wrote a bunch of stuff about myself which she used in her letter and I think she liked me well-enough, but I’m not sure
Additional Info/Rec:
Interview: N/A
Art Supplement: N/A
Other
Date Submitted App: Maybe a week before the deadline?
U.S. State/Territory or Country: Southeast
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket Range: Upper
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): Semester school is a huge hook for some schools because students coming out of those tend to be “independent and curious about the world” (their words not mine haha)
Reflection
Strengths: Test score, GPA (avg for those at my school accepted is 89.5 i think), my school has a good relationship with NEU because one of our counselors (not mine) used to work there, semester school, essay that highlights independence and willingness to take charge, showed some demonstrated interest
Weaknesses: Incredibly weak ECs, no volunteer or community service
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: NEU probably wanted to maintain a good relationship with my school and figured that my stats weren’t so high that I wouldn’t attend but that they were high enough to accept me
What would you have done differently?: More volunteer/community service and leadership positions
Where else did you apply? UGA (accepted), Drexel (accepted w/merit), SLU (accepted w/merit), UMiami, USC, Colby, Wesleyan, Scripps
**Other Factors: ** When an AO came to visit my school, I was attentive during the presentation and asked a few questions
General Comments & Advice: If you’re passionate about something, study and pursue that rather than trying to please everybody by doing what you’re “supposed to do” (varsity sports, student body president, etc.). Colleges will love your passion more than things that a thousand other applicants have- this applies to essays as well! I honestly don’t know how I got in, and I’ve chalked it up to mostly my school’s relationship with NEU, but I’m sure that those who were deferred will get in, and if not, Northeastern was not the right place for you and I know that another place is. Good luck and feel free to PM me if you have any questions!
@vhsdad Then perhaps it was something about his essay, or an exceptional or unique letter of recommendation. Admissions is holistic.
My D is a honors freshman now. She said her class was over enrolled especially for honors. I think they are being cautious this year. Hang in there ! Show interest and don’t be discouraged if it is really where you want to end up. Good luck!
My son was also deferred. I thought he might get the NU Intl offer, but I have only seen one such offer mentioned for EA. Does anyone know if they wait until RD round to make NU Intl offers?
Join the club…my s was deferred… similar stats to you. I think the EA pool is very competitive. We are Boston area and the school is looking for diversity. If you are out of state or international you should be fine during RD round. Remember it’s a deferral not a rejection. I heard the EA acceptances were low ~10%… not sure if that’s accurate.
Accepted from PA to the College of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Honors Program and got a scholarship
- 1430 SAT
- 34 ACT
- 4.00 unweighted GPA (my school doesn’t do weighted GPA)
- 9 APs plus multiple honors classes
- Dual enrollment classes at Lafayette and Lehigh
- Heavily involved in extracurriculars (specifically student gov, key club, soccer, track)
- Really good letters of rec
- Tons of volunteer hours
- Good essays
Good luck to everybody!!
LOL i got in GPA: 1.8 Sat: 980. !!! Decent essays, 0 APs!!
This school is a lower tier college anyway, dont be discouraged if you didnt get in they probably just dont think your going with a gpa like some of you guys who got deffered, for those who got accepted feel blessed it just means ur stats are not that good
@TomSrOfBoston yes I agree that NEU and other schools want a class that want to be there. However at this point in time, students need to cast a wide net because as much as they may want to go to NEU, the reality is the financial numbers may not work for all.
Deferred with a 1490, 4.6 weighted, 3.9 UW, 7 AP’s, 6 clubs, and 3 sports. This school was my first option so I’m extremely disappointed.
This goes to show that putting together a list of schools is highly strategic and cannot be rushed… We got deferred too but I honestly don’t worry. Either DS gets in during RD or he doesn’t and goes elsewhere to college.
Don’t pick 1 ‘safely’ and a ton of Yolo schools. Pick at least 3 schools with reasonable chances to get in…
@collegecrazy2017 I got in bro with a 1.8 gpa and 980 sat
So what I’ve seen is a ton of high-quality applicants get deferred/denied as a way to protect the yield rate, while other top applicants received large merit scholarships and admission to the Honors program. I didn’t get into the Honors program of the CSSH and only received $12k/year, so does that mean I’m not a really good applicant in terms of more selective schools? I applied to NEU as a safety/backup school, and I’m not really interested in going. But obviously I can’t even get into my safety honors college with a good scholarship, so now I don’t know if anywhere else will accept me. I know two people who applied to CS at NEU,and I thought I was a better applicant than both of them. However, both got better scholarships and honors designation, while I’m stuck with nothing. Better yet, neither of them were accepted into my top choice school (Penn). So now I feel that I don’t stand a chance at Penn.
Is Northeastern really that competitive? Honestly I don’t know why I didn’t get a better acceptance, but does it mean that I’m not a very good applicant? Thoughts? Sorry if this question doesn’t make sense or is unable to be answered, I’m just really stressed out now
@summerhazed Don’t even try to figure out why you didn’t get into honors or why someone else has gotten better merit . The whole thing is all over the place from all the schools, my DD’s got into Umass Amherst Engineering although accepted they gave her nothing, no merit no honors. Umass dartmouth, WPI, NEU have all given her good merit and the ones with honors, honors entry.
Soo I’ve been driving myself crazy trying to figure out why the merit is all over the place for all these schools. Her bf who has better stats then her got deferred from NEU!
It’s all insane, sorry had to vent
The point is, No this is not an indication of what you will get from other schools, each will have it’s own wacky formula that we wont be able to figure out. Ugh can’t wait for RD university decisions to come out!
Hang in there and good luck!
Congratulations to all who got their Northeastern decision and good luck to everyone who got deferred, waitlisted, not-accepted. My question is - in addition to the co-op culture/opportunities, what are your other considerations to choosing Northeastern? By March-April timeframe we will need to objectively compare Northeastern with others and we’re trying to collate as much information as we can till then (unfortunately, visiting colleges is not an option for us).
34 act. 3.75 uw/4.35 wgpa. Had a really strong personal statement that helped me get into schools like Michigan and Tulane. I wish there was an “optional” essay for Northeastern but oh well. Obviously disappointed but looks like I’m in the RD pool now! Anyone know if that impacts the amount of financial aid I receive if admitted RD?
@rarri123 on the Northeastern portal, there is a space to upload supplemental documents including an essay. I’m an RD applicant
