EA Class of 2022

@TomSrOfBoston I understand what you are saying about the reason NEU wants to weed out high stats folks.
Unfortunate byproduct of this weeding process is, some of the very interested students are getting hit
with rejects/deferrals. NEU appears to be looking at yield on high school basis. My kids’ school has had
low yield for NEU over the past couple of years.

In any case, if the kid is high achieving they shouldn’t bother about NEU deferrals. They are the kind
who pursue grad schools and, I want to see how many of their graduates go on to do further studies.

BTW, I live 20 minutes from Northeastern and have few of my family members attend(ed) that school.

@FLMomto3 I have to wonder if they are deferring some super high stat kids this year thinking they are only using NU as a safety school and they’ll see who withdraws after ED or ED2 from other schools come out. This is the first year NU has done ED2 and I wonder if thats the effect of ED2 in college admissions… Is NU your child’s first choice? I think NU is being even more selective this year as they were overenrolled by 320 last year and need to manage yield better.

@ChattaChia I believe honors is directed by major/college so higher stat on another major may not get honors…

They also have limited housing (but a fair amount still) for honors and they were overenrolled last year causing a housing issue this current year… so they may be limiting honors to better manage the housing need too.

Reflection

Strengths: Unique extracurriculars, passionate for the things I do I guess, essay
Weaknesses: I applied to engineering when I don’t really want to be an engineer… Will probably switch to enviro. science or biology
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I did show some interest, and I think nothing about me would make an admissions person outright pass me up
What would you have done differently?: Applied to different major for larger scholarship, but hey, I’m pretty happy with what I got
Where else did you apply? Georgia Tech (Accepted) Brown (waiting) Dartmouth (waiting) Cornell (waiting) Stanford (waiting), Oberlin (waiting) RIT (waiting) SUNY ESF (waiting) Tufts (waiting)

General Comments & Advice:
Hmmm, just be yourself and find passion for everything you do. It’s not hard to put in work for things you genuinely care about. Never do something just for the resume, and most importantly, don’t let College Confidential’s toxicity poison you. You can do it! Also remember none of this really matters in the long run and you are privileged/fortunate just to be able to apply to these schools. Keep that in perspective.

ACCEPTED… northeastern is my #1!!!
980 SAT (450 math 530 reading)
1…66 GPA top 90% of class
no activities, 0 aps , bad rec letters, this lower tier college made me happy that i got in!! It was my safety so im glad i got in at least

@pickledginger Hah! I am going to tread lightly when responding your question given that my husband is a Northeastern grad and my daughter may very well wind up at Boston College. Boston is a town that loves its rivalries. You are either North Shore or South Shore. You root for BC or BU hockey. You catch my drift. The line is drawn and you pick your side.

Northeastern has typically been a place where a kid went when they wanted to roll up their sleeves. The student wanted to obtain a real and practical skills sometimes in an accelerated program that got them out into the workforce ASAP. The school produces marvelously prepared engineers, pharmacists, accountants etc. Students chose to go there there because the co-ops provided real work experience. Families breathed a sigh of relief that their child had a paid co-op mid-stream in their education that gave a brief reprieve from tuition.

BC, I think typically attracted the work hard, play hard student that didn’t have to worry so much about landing a paid internship. Kids went to BC to develop critical thinking and writing skills but were not pressing so immediately to gain practical skills. Practical skills came from the graduate program for which BC prepared them well.

Hopefully that’s fair and neither my husband nor my daughter want to strangle me. Welcome to Boston! The lines are drawn. Pick your side.

Current Events Club - 11th-present (i founded it)

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):

Essays: wrote mainly about identity- said how everyone sees me as only an academic, then said how i used other minority communities to find solace & discover myself, ended by saying i desire to go beyond the suburban mold for women (think the last part helped bc i know neu likes students who want to travel & be global citizens)

Teacher Recommendation #1: my French teacher since 10th grade ?/10 (school doesn’t let us look at rec letters) she most likely noted my interest in politics & current events
Teacher Recommendation #2: my sophomore Chem teacher who’s my AP Chem teacher this year ?/10 (but probably good bc i was one of the best in my class)
Counselor Rec: should be good bc we filled out questionnaires & mine really represents both my academic side & sort of odd-ball interests (bridges the essay and teacher recs together i think)
Additional Info/Rec: i chose a good teacher selection bc I’m a Chem major w/ a minor in Political Science
Interview: n/a
Art Supplement: n/a

Other

Date Submitted App: October 22
U.S. State/Territory or Country: NY
School Type: Catholic all-girls
Ethnicity: Black (Caribbean)
Gender: Female
Income Bracket Range: ~150K
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development):
URM bc Northeastern has a low diversity rate (6% for black/african-american)
Don’t think being a woman of color in a Chemistry major hurt either

Reflection

Strengths: definitely think my essay and recs compensated for my lower grades and act score
also that i actually have a personality & ppl at my school w/ good stats are kinda uncultured
i also show really great upwards trend with my grades and a clear shift towards the sciences after freshman year (bio was an 89, chem was a 95)
nice diversity in clubs and they’re kinda simple so
Weaknesses: definitely my grades (my gpa falls below 4.0 bc midterm & regents grades are 10% of the final avg and it kinda drags some classes down)
also I think I come off a little detached from my academics bc I praise outside learning so much (i prefer to read or go to a museum than get better at math lol)
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think mostly bc the admissions officers were looking for someone w/ a wholesome app. Although my grades aren’t as high as others, I think that my genuine interest in the arts and offbeat things made up for them. I also come off as an old soul, so maybe I stood out in that way too.

What would you have done differently?: Wish I sent out supplements bc it made me so nervous that I didn’t. Also wish my ACT scores were higher (I super scored to a 32 but this was after I applied)

Where else did you apply?
EA:
Binghamton (accepted)
New Paltz (accepted)
Clark University (accepted w/ scholarship)
UChicago (deferred)
RD:
William & Mary
Columbia (a reach i know)
BU
NYU

**Other Factors: **
showed interest (tours, opted into mailed info)
smaller app pool–a lot of high stat ppl here apply to NEU RD as safety

General Comments & Advice:
Definitely don’t think a deferment is a rejection (I actually think high stat deferred applicants have a really high chance of getting accepted if they don’t withdraw) and to the people rejected, don’t worry! The whole dream school idea don’t exist bc if they didn’t accept you, you probably will blossom more somewhere else! Also, I think it’s SO much more important to show admissions that you don’t let grades define you & that you aren’t afraid to pursue interests outside of your desired career–that’s probably more beneficial than seeming driven about that career path (I def showed a lot interest in politics and art even as a science major). Good luck on your college journey!

Reflection

Strengths: My common app essay was pretty good, and Im an international applicant
Weaknesses: cumulative gpa
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: my extra curricular, background, essay
What would you have done differently?: nothing
Where else did you apply?

**Other Factors: ** I applied to the business school as an entrepreneur major, so having run my own business with net profits of over 10k they probably liked that.

General Comments & Advice: a lot of people from my school got deferred, so I don’t see it as being a rejection rather a “we need some more time to think”.

@stardustmom
I actually received a International Scholar scholarship if that is what you are referring to?
I’m from Brazil but live in the US with a student visa. I have a 32 ACT and a 4.3 cum GPA.

Did he have good grades/scores? A lot of people from my school got deferred, out of 20 students only 4 got accepted.

@twicemama
It is in her “top” choice list, but merit aid is a huge driver. She loved Boston while spending time there, and the school has many intriguing things for her. At this point, it’s too early. She is still very interested and although disappointed to be deferred, has already drafted her response. I am choosing to look at it as extra motivation for her…she tends to fight harder when challenged, so in a warped way, perhaps this is a blessing?

I think I am yet to see one post referring to Northeastern as their absolute top choice. Whenever anyone posts about either getting into Northeastern or getting deferred, they always seem to say Northeastern is “one of” their top choices. The only other school I have followed where the applicants have been this wishy washy when it comes to committing to it being their favorite is Case Western. Just an observation.

EDHDAD … Top choice for my son who was deferred in EA. With that said, it is the top choice all other things equal, as in merit and financial aid, not to mention it is not #1 if the offer is NU in. I’m sure there are many who are hedging and don’t want to over invest in any one school.

I am one of those people that NEU is one of my top choices, but thats just because I want options and I want to visit and choose which school is right for me. I got into NEU EA but thats the whole point of EA, its for people who are not completely certain but they still wanted to apply. I’m still waiting on a couple other schools but I would be delighted to go to Northeastern

@pickledginger @RelocatedYankee, if I might chime in (as another local) with a rather simplistic take on the Northeastern vs BC comparison…

Northeastern is Dunkin Donuts
Boston College is Starbucks

@LolliCoomassie Are you saying that BC is overpriced and pretentious?

@TomSrOfBoston LOL! That’s not exactly what I said. But of course you should read into it what you like.

@LolliCoomassie I got in to Northeastern with 1.66 gpa and 980 sat! This lower tier school basically accepts anyone so dont be upset if you dont get in your probably are too good.

@EDHDAD Northeastern is my son’s absolute #1 school, so he is ecstatic he got in EA with a decent scholarship, although we really wish it were more. Unlike so many people these days who apply to double digit number of schools, he only applied to two. I highly encouraged him to apply to a couple of safety schools, but he did not want to apply to schools he had no interest in going to. Had he not gotten into Northeastern EA, he would have applied to our state flagship school (deadline is Feb1), but he really didn’t want to go there.

@bethanylm291 Thank you. Now I’ve heard someone say it!
