My son checked on line and was accepted today in Mechanical Engineering. He had a 33 on the ACT (34 Math, 35 Science). Also a National AP Scholar (including 5s on BC Calculus, Biology, Physics-Mechanics, Physics-E&M, and Computer Science), NM commended, Varsity Basketball, two-year hospital volunteer, paid work experience, 3.53/4.0 cumulative GPA from one of the toughest high schools in America, 3.88 junior year GPA.

Miami was the last school my son applied to. It was not really on our radar, but I looked at the merit aid, read a lot, and talked him into applying. He does not want to stay in Arizona. With his older brother, we visited Michigan, Rose-Hulman, Purdue, and Illinois. He likes the Midwest. He has been accepted to several small schools and several very large state schools. Miami may be that Goldilocks option: not too small, not too big, but just right, especially with its top ranking for undergraduate teaching. We need to visit.
