Stats: 1420 SAT, 770 Math II, 690 Physics(did not send to some), 4.2 GPA,
Out of State for UNC and UVA
ECs: TASP, Founder of 2 Clubs, President of 1, and also some self-independent activities I run on my own, as well as having some of my poetry published.
It is a stressful time and I am sorry you aren’t experiencing the results you want. The schools you listed are all very, very competitive. I doubt you are doing anything wrong, with that said a few questions:
Are you in-state for Umich?
What is your unweighted GPA?
Have you applied to other schools? Safeties? Matches?
OOS for all – UW around the area of 3.8 – Safeties are American, Tulane IMO, BU, BC
Reaches – Harvard, Columbia, Brown, CMU, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke (I classified as Pacific Islander)
ED II to UChicago
I don’t see any safeties on your list, and clearly Tulane and BC deferring you bears that out…these schools are safeties for no one. American is probably a match, although now that I have read some of your past threads I am not sure these are your real stats…you have a number of threads with different stats.
From your Harvard thread:
ACT: 34 (plan to retake)
GPA: 3.7 / 4.0
APs: AP Physics I, AP Physics II, AP Language and Composition A, AP US Government & Politics, AP US History, AP Physics C, AP Chemistry, AP Calc AB, AP Euro History
SAT IIs: 800 Physics , 800 Math II , 790 US History
Regardless: Have you sent in LOCI to the schools that have deferred you? First semester grades?
Do you have a GC helping you? What does your GC say? How does Naviance look for the schools still in the mix? Is there still time to apply to your state flagship and/or any true safeties?
Edited to add: American is only a match if you demonstrated interest…did you? In what ways?
You have no safeties. Tulane has a 17% acceptance rate, BU 22%; they cannot be considered a safety even for valedictorians with perfect test scores. You have only one match (American) and they accept fewer than one in 3. So all reaches and one match.
You need to add a few safeties and matches. What is your academic interest?
Try to apply to a few rolling admissions safeties, I second the above statements: you have no classic “safety” schools on your list. Are there any in-state schools for you with a 50% acceptance rate or higher? If so, consider these just as back ups.
Have you shown much demonstrated interest to American? Visited, regional info session, interviewed? It’s not anyone’s safety without demonstrated interest, especially RD.
Thanks for the input.
Re LOCI - will send soon to deffered schools after this week’s regional qualifier
Re Demonstrated Interest @ America. - campus visit and info session
Re academic interest — English and or philosophy to pursue law grad
Re other schools — Loyola I’m thinking about doing
Re Mid Year Senior Grades — bear Perfect GPA. Mostly APS. Most demanding. I think one B+
Re GC— thinks I’m bound for a top school and believes I’ll get in somewhere good on my list
LOCI to your deferrals are overdue, especially UMich. Get those out to the AOs ASAP…not sure if you are saying it will be another week or not, but don’t wait.
Make sure GC sends S1 grades…you had a great semester and that may help.
Which Loyola?
Your GC’s advice is not serving you well, of course it’s good to be optimistic and hopeful, but hope is not a sensible college admission strategy. Apply to a safety or two that you would be happy to attend. If you don’t, you risk having a painfully long spring/summer and possibly an unplanned GAP year. Good luck.
Do you have naviance? At my daughter’s school, American tended to deny those with near perfect GPAs and high standardized test scores. Around 3.2-3.8 gpa seemed the sweet spot for acceptance, though this will change per school. American hates being seen as a back up school and actively engages in yield protection. The fact that your SAT score is below 1450ish may perversely help you here (again, look compared to your school.)
I presume Loyola Chicago, as LMU deadline has passed? (Are there others?)
I’m also a bit surprised at your GC. Your private “safeties” and the OOS admit rates for the publics are, AU excepted, in the teens or low 20s. Nothing is guaranteed at these levels. Even AU at 26% is not guaranteed, especially in the RD round.
^^I assumed Loyola Chicago as well, but Loyola New Orleans’ deadline hasn’t passed yet either. There is also Loyola Marymount in LA, deadline has passed same as Loyola Maryland. Phew, a lot of Loyolas
@Acortez122 You have a chance me thread from June where you say “SAT: 1540”, and also say “Ethnicity: Asian”. I do understand that you can be Asian and also Pacific Islander, although I have no idea what schools will do with this. I don’t understand the different SAT scores.
Are two of you sharing an account, or were you being optimistic last June, or am I missing something?
Understood with the statement regarding using hope for college admissions.
Re AU – did a campus visit + informational session there
Re Loyola – speaking of the Chicago Loyola – wanted to do the Cali one but deadline passed
Re Pacific Islander – the Pacific Islander part gives me a hook (URM) due to a DNA test I took. I put Asian for Ea/ed schools, Pacific Islander for RD
Loyola Chicago will be a highly likely for you, assuming these are the correct stats…which you still haven’t addressed, and multiple posters have asked. Will you go there if that’s your only option?
1420 is the SAT everything I’ve said is correct stats on this thread. I will have to go if it’s my only option. I thought at least TASP would carry some weight though…
I would get your Loyola app out sooner rather than later. And the LOCI too, those can be very important especially at the 4 schools that deferred you.
Because of Loyola, are you in Illinois or surrounding states? I don’t have a clear picture of what you want in a school because I think your list was driven by prestige more than fit. But here are some schools where deadlines haven’t passed, which are matches to highly likelies…Marquette (probably still room, it goes rolling after priority deadline)? Butler? U Iowa or Iowa State? Pitt?
If you want to give some parameters for matches/safeties, I am sure posters will come up with good suggestions of schools where the deadline has not passed.
