Right now I am just starting up my sophomore year in highschool. I want to join a boy scout troop and try to get eagle scout before I apply to one of the military academies, so I can actually put it on my application before then? Could I do it in time?
I would like to share my insight on this. It would be very very difficult for you to achieve Eagle Scout in less than 2 years. I am a Venture Scout, which is a coed version of Boy Scouts and my brother is also a rising sophomore like you and he has been part of Boy Scouts/cub scouts since he was in second grade. I believe he is currently a Star Scout; two more ranks and he would become an Eagle Scout.
I’m not sure if you are aware, but you need 21 merit badges and also do a service project to achieve eagle. It’s too late this year, but most Boy Scout troops have summer camp where you get to work on several merit badges. You may be able to knock out a couple if you go to summer camp next year.
Lastly, the deadline to become an Eagle Scout isn’t at the end of your senior year, but it is when you turn 18. If you don’t have all the requirements done by the time you turn 18, you won’t be able to have a board of review.
Making Eagle Scout is hard, only 2% of all Boy Scouts actually make it. If you decide on joining, I wish you good luck!
@Mash9071 - Not realistic. You have about at most 24 months to reach this goal for the nomination process. Here js the Scout Math
Time to Advance from New Scout to First Class: 10 - 12 months
Time required to advance from First class to Star: 4 Months
Time Required to advance from Star to Life: 6 months
Time Required to advance from Life to Eagle: 6 months
Total time minimum: 26 Months
The rank of Eagle Scout represents years of work, service and leadership in your troop. Joining scouts so you can churn through the ranks and get to Eagle Scout to burnish an application is the antithesis of what it’s all about.
