Eagle Scout Palms

Hey everyone im gonna be a sophomore this september and I am also a boyscout. I plan on reaching the eagle rank in august of 2015, which is about a year before my college apps. If I get 3 eagle palms, which are prestigious awards (each palm symbolizing 5 extra merit badges after eagle scout), then will it put me significantly ahead of all the other eagle scouts. Every year, about 60,000 eagle scouts apply to colleges. However, of all the eagle scouts in the entire BSA, only about 60-70 people in the southern region of the USA (my region) got all three eagle palms. I know that this will help me for college, but how much is what I was wondering. I have decent grades, about a 3.7 GPA, which is sure to improve with AP classes, etc. I’m also currently interning at a local business. What are my chances?

Congratulations on your participation in Scouting. When you receive your Eagle Scout Rank that will be a great accomplishment. Eagle Palms are nice awards. However, I do not believe that palms will make much of a difference in admission. The Eagle Rank is much more important. Eagle involves years of work and significant leadership. Palms just require obtaining additional merit badges. Enjoy scouting, help lead the younger scouts, find a great Eagle project, get your palms, stay involved. Palms will not help you in college admissions as much as scouting can help you in your personal development and life.

Keep up with participation in scouting, and don’t give up on Eagle, because it will become very challenging at times. The palms also show continual commitment, leadership, and involvement on scouting in addition to the 15 extra MBs. Good luck on the project in the future, from an Eagle Scout with a Silver palm.
