Early Action - Class of 2024 Full Discussion Thread

chance for D for Biological Sciences major from large NOVA high school:
4.0 W GPA; 3.7 UW GPA
1330 SAT (710 math, 620 reading)
4 APs through junior year; taking 3 this year but just dropped AP Bio
senior year grades are not great

I would normally say very good chance
I still think you will get in. Only hesitation is we don’t know what biology acceptances are going to be like after the over acceptance last year.

Interestingly, we are supposed to find out acceptance on/by the 22nd but the Davenport scholarship for engineering students will have results out on or by the 20th. Maybe they are planning on releasing decisions this day as well. It would be strange to win a scholarship to a school you haven’t been officially accepted into yet. (Just speculating)

I got in Early Decision and to see all my friends have to wait months for an admissions decisions is kind of crazy by VT. @cbl1 I think an Early Action II would help.

Was Pamplin one of the schools that was over-accepted last year?

pamplin was not. I imagine their acceptances will be same as last year.

Did the english major department over accept as well? @cbl1

Primarily it was engineering and biology/science related majors.

But you clearly said “those who have VT as their #1” in your prior post? Point is - if the student is shopping around, the decision dates are clearly stated on every school’s admission pages. Caveat Emptor.

But a wait until March 31 for RD like some of the schools mentioned in previous posts makes more sense? Or an EA app deadline that’s a full month before VT’s? And none of those schools have an ED option, so again we’re in an apples to mangoes comparison.

Attended an info session at VT today. Admission officer confirmed early action decisions will be released this Friday afternoon (2/21). He did not give an exact time, but I’m guessing it will likely be around 5pm.

Anyone else concerned with the overcrowding at VT that happened last year? I wonder if it will affect this year’s admissions at all. I was watching a current student’s VLOG on YouTube and the girl said that if she doesn’t get to campus really early (like 7:30 AM), the only option is to park literally 1.5 miles from campus. This isn’t good if you ask me. She was a 2nd year student and already living off-campus. Isn’t it part of the college experience to live ON campus at least your first 2 years and take it all in and enjoy that beautiful campus that was part of the draw in the first place?

Not concerned. I believe most college students always move off campus after 1st year as they like having their own room vs a dorm. It should mean tighter admission this year so I would be concerned if I had a child who wants to go to Tech and may not get in because of harder acceptance this year.

My son is a freshman and has no complaints related to overcrowding. He is having a terrific time.

Any complaints of being inconvinienced because of high enrollment means your complaining they have given kids to much opportunity. I would hate to be the parent of child that didn’t get in last year had they not overly admitted.

Interesting viewpoint. I completely disagree. Schools need to be responsible and admit the numbers that allow for proper housing, course availability, etc.

If what you are saying is true, why not admit 100K students and say to heck with it. At least you are getting an opportunity. Hogwash.

We disagree. No reason to be disrespectful.

I have seen no issue of not having proper housing or course availability. They had to adjust and I’m sure this year will be more difficult to get acceptance. To the detriment of some families who are hoping for admission.

Chances for Engineering
Applied EA OOS from New Jersey
4.1 W GPA
8 AP’s (4 taken 9-11)
1480 SAT (780 M 700 R)

Looks very good to me.

@hastalavista very good point. We really liked VT but were very disappointed when we digged deeper and saw the overcrowding etc. Where were the controls especially from a school that prides itself on being “tech-y”. How can it not affect the classes? Either there are more kids in every class or they hire extra Profs to add to the tuition prices or use TAs who while decent are not the same as full Profs
among the other issues.
Our oldest is at a school where kids love being on campus all 4 years. For a full experience I would think at least two years on a campus would be best. Who wants to be parking far away and dealing with that - at the minimum it means the need to have a car $. For OOS parents who pay more the addition of a car expense early in college is not a welcome one.
Don’t get me wrong, the campus is beautiful, the people were very nice but we are interested to see what comes on Friday with numbers etc. Hopefully they will share acceptance numbers, % to see if they erred on the side of caution this year.

Parking 1.5 miles away is really a big inconvenience especially during winter in the mountains. I would also think over acceptance like last year is bad - crowded classes plus major competition on internship and eventual jobs. Companies won’t hire more because of more students graduating. I am sure this year they would be cautious on the number offered. On the flip side the size of the class graduating this year would also matter.

A lot of the apartment complexes are on the Blacksburg Transit bus line.

Most kids take the BT buses, so parking shouldn’t be an issue. I spent 4 years there without a car and had no issues at all getting to and from campus.
