early action/decision at JHU and Cornell

My son is taking Math level 2 SAT only in December (already taken SAT Biology). JHU and Cornell are his dream schools for studying Biology. Would it be wise to wait for regular decision in this situation, instead of trying our luck at early action/decision?

JHU and Cornell have binding early decision (ED) not non-binding early action (EA). He can apply ED to only one college. Cornell requires two SAT subject tests of its applicants and thus if math is intended to be one of those two, then if taken in Dec it will be too late for ED and he cannot apply without two; if taken in Nov it would be timely for ED. If he already has two high scores on other subject tests, he could apply ED. In that case whether he should do so really depends on factors (grades, courses, test scores, ECs, all things that go into an application, and the degree to which you need financial aid because the amounts awarded can often be disappointing to an ED candidate) that cannot be evaluated by the minimal info you have given and ultimately comes down to a personal decision.

JHU recommends but does not require three SAT subject tests. You should assume that it is better to have three good scores to submit if there are any weaknesses elsewhere in the application. If he is a very strong candidate based on current grades and test scores without three subject tests, he might consider ED but again that requires weighing a number of factors.

Why wait until December? Has your son taken the SAT I and is satisfied with his scores? If not, he can still retake the SAT I in October and take the SAT II in November. November scores will still be sent in time for ED consideration, if he really wants to apply to Cornell.
