LKJ-def talk to your college counselor at school. You still have a chance but you want to find out what you need to do to present yourself in the best light. There are many great schools out there; be open to other options.

Do you know anything about NC State? I’m submitting an application there this weekend. Would I get in?

LKJLKJ, it’s pretty odd that they deferred you since you are IS with those stats. However, if I had to guess, your GPA pulled you down the most. Your SAT is excellent for in state. Send in your mid year report and another letter of recommendation. Deferred is not that bad. You’ve got the same chance as every other regular decision applicant. And NCSU? Yes. Absolutely unless you are some type of criminal :P. They go specifically by SAT and GPA. ECs are only for scholarships.

Been deferred from 4 schools now… Tulane, UNC, UVA, and Colorado college. All oos. Lmao this sucks

I mean, do you think it could be because I took the ACT in December and they said to have all standardized testing done in November? My SAT then was a 1970, but my CR was really low. I’m really concerned about this because everyone is telling me I should have gotten in! I mean, where do you think I stand in the RD pool?

thanks for the response. what i meant to ask was that if i have all my stuff for the app ready way before the deadline, let’s say beginning of sept, can i send it in or do i HAVE to wait until octobers deadline? just want to get it in and done with. i realize that it won’t give me an early decision. just want to get a jump on it. ohhhh, one more question, if i apply EA to UNC, when should I start applying elsewhere just in case I don’t get accepted there. What did you do?

I sent my UNC application in mid September. I also went a head and had a list of schools I was interested in and wanted to apply to ready over the summer with various deadlines and requirements noted. I achieved my goal of having all my applications done before winter break! So now it’s just waiting to hear back from everywhere. I would almost always suggest applying to more than one school, especially with how variable UNC admissions can be. And if you’re applying other places, might as well get them done early to save you stress later!

yes, i agree. what will you do if you get accepted to UNC first before finding out the rest of the decisions? what if a better financial package comes along?

Decision: Rejected

Subjective:

Essays: 9/10 (Felt this was my best essay; wrote about making cover of NY Times for winning Illinois governor election by hacking the electronic ballot and related it back to the time I hacked the senior photos of every senior in my county.
Teacher Recs: 8/10
Counselor Rec: 7/10 (Never had the chance to read)

General Comments: Pretty bummed about being rejected. I mean UNC has the most attractive girls in the country, the most sex in the country, the best moonshine in the country, good weather, and, of course, the academics along with the research triangle are fantastic.
Final thoughts: I’m not blaming affirmative action, but yeah, I despise affirmative action.
Best of luck to all

LKJ–Not being an expert on this it seems like you have a chance–What is your weighted GPA? 4.47 is average weighted GPA for accepted students and 1970 is in the middle also. I thought that your unweighted GPA would translate to around a 4.4.

From what I understand the same people review the applications from certain schools and districts, so you must have lost some tie breakers with your peers.

NC State is an excellent school and you will be competitive, but they ask you to write a personnel statement that is different than UNCs essays, so you need to do a good job on that. We visited NC State and liked the campus and they have top notch programs.

Ive been lurking on CC for months and since I’ve only seen a few post from kids applying as OOS legacies, I thought I would post on behalf of my son. .

Accepted, double legacy from GA

2200 SAT one sitting
Large private school, took only Honors or AP since freshman but just 3.35U/W
Rec from a couple of teachers who knew the kid well but no clue what they wrote.
E.C. s were just ok.
Son did cycle across the country year before last and that made for an interesting read in the Common App essay

Main purpose of my post was to offer a data point for other OOS legacy applicants - UNC DOES give consideration to this demo in the applicant pool - I don’t think they make a secret out of their interest in the value of long running family relationships - but I can assure everyone being a huge donor is not what they’re looking for. Our family was certainly not a source of much money. . .lol!

Congrats to everyone who got the news they were hoping for. UNC is just one school, so for those who didn’t get in, I am absolutely sure you are going to go someplace where you will have just as amazing an experience.

Accepted
OOS
SAT: 1840
Math: 610 Reading: 650 Writing: 580
GPA: 4.17 (W) 3.56 (UW)
Lots of community service
NHS, employed, varsity basketball, etc.
AMAZING essays.
I’m shocked that I got in. Obviously, UNC was a reach school for me. I’m black and Latino plus my essays were unusual. For those who did not get in or were deferred, I guess this shows that UNC uses more subjective factors in admissions than other schools.

Daughter accepted IS.

SAT: 2050 (630, 630, 790)
ACT: 29
Rank: 11/419
ECs: Editor in Chief of award-winning school paper, 4 year starter on varsity sports team,
NHS, etc.
Good letters of recommendation from teachers familiar to admissions office.
7 APs at graduation. 4s and 5s on the ones taken at application time.

Anecdotal advice to those deferred: Students at our kids’ school have submitted additional letters of recommendation detailing why the student would be an asset to UNC. They were admitted in the regular round.

@jamminj I was deferred from UNC EA and I’m still waiting to hear from my number two school. Right now my plan is to see where I stand on acceptances in April and what kind of money I have to different places and then make a pro/con chart for each school. I have them all ranked in my head but if UNC doesn’t work out (likely) and my number two school doesn’t work out then my decision will probably come down to what school gives me the most money. I should have good merit aide to both of my instate flagship schools and I don’t think ill qualify for need based anywhere. I hope this helps!

Accepted OOS!

Please! My decision still isn’t available and I’m starting to get really worried! Is there anyone else having this same problem?

apov, make sure you log out of the connect carolina website AND close your browser THEN log back in to see if you can get a decision.

Illinoise-you would find this UNC news update about grading scandal interesting: [Updated data on UNC scandal details bogus classes, suspect grade changes - Local/State - NewsObserver.com](http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/01/25/2632455/martin-baker-tilly-release-new.html)

Many feel affirmative action has served its purpose and is time to begin a new chapter.

I still get no decision

oos Accepted
