Early Action!

Sorry for all you outstanding OOS. It doest seem fair somehow but what can you do?Good luck to you all! I am sure that you are going to succeed anywhere you go.
I am really happy to live in north Carolina.
My son was accepted.
32 ACT.
2040 SAT
Great essays
Good recs (I suspect, but how do you really know)
Marching band 4yrs
All county, all district and State wind ensemble
4AP’s so far (all4’s).
4AP’s in senior year
NC Governors school.

Looking at stats I was pretty sure he would get in but all day I have been second guessing myself.

He has applied to Duke too. We will see…

Arlmom, not totally arbitrary. UVa is even harder to get in to than UNC so your results make more sense than those of krishbharat who got in to UVa but not in to UNC, though I guess being in state in Virginia for you adds an extra dimension of wonder. Anyhow, congrats to each since both are great schools.

Rejected out of state:
2060 SAT
29 ACT
5 AP, all other classes honors
UW 3.85, W 4.76
Rank 2/543 seniors
Solid, original essays

National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Board of Executives of Math Honor Society, actively involved in community serviceat my church, Varsity Soccer with a regional award this year

really bummed about this one, but hey congrats to all that got accepted!!

dowzer – the irony is that the in-state acceptance rate for UVA is far higher than the oos rate for UNC. UVA has a reputation for being a numbers school. She was above the 75th percentile for accepted students on her SATs, and also has excellent grades. My guess is that it was an issue with the number of kids who apply from her high school; roughly 3/4 of the class applies to UVA. One of our two Jeff scholar nominees – chosen through a highly competitive process at an extremely good high school – was also deferred.

forgot to add 720 Chem SAT II, 690 Math II, and Spanish 710

not the best test taker

They would not even let my son into NHS. That society is BS. Sorry.

I’m not convinced its arbitrary but D applied to UNC (EA-rejected), UVA (EA-accepted!), and William and Mary (RD). UVA was #1 for several reasons, but Carolina and W&M get lots of love too. In at UVA usually means not in at W&M instate. UNC is tough OOS and while her stats should have been good enough (on naviance etc) clearly they were looking for something else. She said, “What did I do wrong?” which leads me to my point. To get in to all of your top schools of this caliber has to involve a certain amount of luck, since most applicants could do the work- I’ve no doubt of that. Everyone will end up in a good place. My checkbook is happy that for my D, its a top-notch in-state school. Arlmom, I agree that your D’s situation is surprising though.

Thanks, 89wahoo – you put it better than I did. “Arbitrariness” may have been too strong a word. All of these schools have more qualified students than they can accept, so once you meet those qualifications, there’s an element of luck. UVA was just a surprise, given her record and her high school’s normally great relationship with UVA. But she was also accepted EA at Tulane with the President’s scholarship, so she has two excellent choices already. And of course we’ll see what March brings. Congrats to your daughter on UVA – it’s an excellent school, and that in-state tuition is lovely!

Let’s help out future generations and post on the Stats only thread so they don’t have to search through 1,400 posts!

Should we open a facebook group for Class of 2017?

I was deferred and I’m really upset. I’m in-state
Here are my stats:

ACT-30
English-34
Math-31
Reading-30
Science-26
GPA (UW): 3.67
SAT-1980

I have really good essays and really good extracurriculars and I don’t know why this happened. Is there any chance for me to get in RD?

Yes, you have an excellent chance as your stats are in the very middle of the pool of accepted applicants. They defer a select population of students, so getting deferred is not all bad. Sorry that this process is going to be prolonged. Go talk to your counselor at school an he/she will be able to help you.

Are you sure? Is there anything I can do? I’m really freaking out and taking this as a rejection. I feel like not many of the deferred people get accepted. So you think my stats are average, or do you think they’re slightly above for RD?

Congrats to those who were accepted, keep your hopes high to those that were deferred, and chin-up to those that weren’t. It may not seem like it now, but it DOES always work out in the end. I am new to this forum, and just have a simple question, (I’m sure you’ll direct me to the proper place), but, when did you submit your early applications? I am a junior, graduating in 2014 am planning on EA to UNC. I know what the deadline is, what I really would like to know is how early is early??

jamminj-not sure of your question. They will post an Early Action deadline next year and as long as your app is in by that day, it meets the criteria and nothing earlier gets an earlier response.
