Early Admissions at Northwestern

I’m thinking about applying to NU next year. Can anyone tell me applying early decision gives you a big advantage at NU?

I think the advantage is definitely noticeable. About a quarter
of the incoming freshman class is admitted early decision, and they admit somewhere around half of the applicants that apply early decision. So if you are definitely set on NU, early decision is probably the way to go

the school is more likely to accept you if NU is your first choice. they love kids who apply early, because it shows commitment to the school. i know a couple of people who were accepted early with stats way below the average.

Well, I’m planning on applying to NU early decision (havent taken my SATs yet so I have no scores to give). How much does getting a ‘C’ in a class hurt your chances? Because I’ve been struggling very badly with Trigonometry at my community college, where I take classes aside from my being a full-time highschool student. I have ‘ok’ extra-curriculars, but I’m going this summer to Australia/New Zealand as part of a student ambassadorial delegation, which corresponds nicely with my wish to go into International Studies/Political Science.

People to People?

Don’t waste your time (and money)

Er…why not?

Jolena, generally getting C’s is not a good idea, but getting a C in a CC trig course your junior year on top of a full load at high school doesn’t sound so bad. It sounds like you’re willing to push yourself and take advantage of the available opportunities.

I agree with dsmo, though. You might want to do a little more research into that summer program. I don’t know if I remember right, but I think we checked into it when my daughter was a junior. She received mail implying she was somehow nominated and chosen to be a delegate in an international program. It turned out to be an expensive program available to anybody who could pay for it, thus it looked like a way to buy EC padding. Again… I might be wrong, but that’s the sort of thing you might want to check out.

You might be better off participating in a summer program at NU, but I think it’s too late to apply for this summer. I’m not sure though, so you might want to check it out.

You might want to think about how else you could spend your summer, organizing your own travel, volunteering in some effective and innovative way, or otherwise pursuing your own passions.

Thanks for the reply, it’s a little encouraging. I’m taking 9 classes this semester and have an ‘A’ in all but Trig, and I’m already planning on taking 8 classes next year–four of them APs and one in the CC, so I dunno…hopefully it won’t count so bad against me.

As for People to People, it’s a nationally accredited program and was founded by President Eisenhower with every successive US President acting as Honorary Chairman. It IS very expensive though, and yes, I was nominated and no, you don’t have to be nominated to qualify. You do, however, have to go through an interview and selection process to be allowed to go. It seems like a fun and informative way to spend three weeks of the summer—going to different countries, sightseeing and getting to meet various heads of state.

I don’t know if this was the same program your daughter was mailed, but here’s the website: http://studentambassadors.org/
