Early Decision at Dartmouth and Early Action

Can you apply early decision to Dartmouth and at the same time apply early action to another school where the early action decision is non binding?

Nope. You may only sign the ED contract it its the only early notification program you’re applying for.

Yes, you can apply to Dartmouth ED and other schools EA.

The exceptions would be schools with SCEA (Stanford, Yale, Tulane) and schools that have restrictive early action policy (georgetown, boston college) where you can apply EA/Rolling at other schools, but you cannot apply ED.

Post #2 and #3 both seem correct which is why we are confused! Any one else care to chime in?

number 3 is correct. you need to research what type of early action plan you are applying to.

You CAN apply early decision AND early action (as long as it’s not single choice early action, like what yale and stanford have), as long as you understand that if you get in early decision, you will withdraw all of your applications.

Since we all know the SCEA policies at Stanford and Yale and are in agreement, here are the examples of restrictive early action and Tulane’s SCEA:

At Georgetown:

Boston College- Restrictive Early Action:

Tulane:

In short, you cannot apply ED to Dartmouth and EA to Stanford, Yale, Tulane (SCEA), Boston College and Georgetown

Thank you for all the replies. We wanted ED to Dartmouth and EA to Villanova. It seems to me like it is ok but my child’s GC says that it is not allowed. It is a school that sends many to Ivy’s so I know the GC is familiar with Dartmouth.

I can tell you unequivocally that your child’s GC had provided you with incorrect information. Your child may apply to Villanova EA and Dartmouth ED as Villanova has no stipulations regarding their early action policies.

But as you already know, if your child is accepted to Dartmouth ED, s/he must withdraw all other application and not make any new ones.

My receommendation is sit down have the money talk with your child abut how much you are realistically willing to pay/ borrow for college. Run your numbers through Dartmouth FA calculator (in our experience had been pretty dead on) in addition to running them through the FAFSAcaster.

[Cost Estimator](<a href=“Home | Financial Aid”>Home | Financial Aid)

The only “disadvantage” imho would be that while Villanova offers merit money, Dartmouth only offers need based FA (which you would be giving up if your child is accepted to Dartmouth ED and EA to Nova).

hope this helps

Thank you Sybbie719! Your info was very helpful.
