I completed a tentative schedule (using excel) for auditions. Can you request auditions on dates that are called out as ED dates even if you are not requesting ED?

S has 9 schools on his list of which 7 will require overnight visits. He would prefer we visit every school vs. the unified auditions, its important to him he get a “feel” for the campuses. Based on this and a few other factors we have a tentative schedule starting in November. If he gets all the paperwork and prescreening requirements in it looks like we have at least one school on the list tentatively scheduled on their ED date. I wasn’t sure if those dates are reserved for applicants requesting early decision or not. Thanks

If I were you, I would call the admissions department for the school directly. There may not be a general rule and you want to be sure of the rules for that school.

I think most schools will not want anyone auditioning on the ED date except ED applicants. If there’s one you really need to do that with, call up and see if it’s possible.

I would call the theatre department directly. Admissions may not have all the details. I have been quite shocked at how little the people who answer the phone in admissions know. Recently I called a school and said “when does the 2014 application open?” and they didn’t know.

One of the things to keep in mind throughout the audition process is that you are dealing with human beings who are, in general, quite reasonable in dealing with issues affecting individual student situations. If you have a problem that you have honestly, but unsuccessfully, tried to solve on your own, you should never hesitate to contact the program and explore possibilities with them. Of course every program has limits as to what it is able or willing to do in response to an individual student issue, but you may be surprised at how helpful they can be in working out solutions that you may not have considered. Auditions are operated by creative people who work with creative people. And, generally speaking, they are pretty smart. Use their experience and knowledge.
My daughter sprained her ankle halfway through her audition season in 2012 and for three weeks simply could not dance. She contacted the schools and was able to reschedule two of her remaining auditions at a time when audition slots appeared to be largely unavailable. At the school where she could not reschedule (a program well-known for a demanding dance audition), she was allowed to submit a DVD of a dance scene from a high school show.
Yeah, the process is intimidating. But there is much more humanity out there than you might think.

There are some schools with Fall audition dates that are not necessarily related to an early admissions decision. Some may have rolling admissions. Others are just trying to provide as many audition dates as possible. Some I can think of that offered early audition dates in the Fall, include Elon, OCU, Ithaca, Rider and Ohio Northern. Note that many MT programs do not even make ED available to their applicants. So although you can audition early, you may not get an answer until regular decision time. We did not do that but I understand that a long wait can be excruciating! My advice would be to schedule a couple of early auditions with schools not on the top of your list but with rolling admissions. If it isn’t your first choice school there is a little less pressure. The early audition allows you to test your material and get used to auditioning. And should you get an early acceptance it definitely takes some pressure off remaining auditions knowing you have somewhere to go. A successful early audition also can build confidence for later ones.

If you’re wondering about other schools with rolling admissions, do a search on this forum and the Theatre one. I know this has been discussed a lot within the last year. And then check with any individual schools, don’t just take a CC post as gospel, because schools change.

I must say, it helped my son’s self-confidence a lot to have an early admission (non-binding).

Thanks everyone. Looks like per the website ED applicants must audition on this date but it doesn’t mention excluding RD so I will call to clarify. I’m not sure how you fit 9 or 10 without starting in the fall.

My personal uptempo song choice is “On The Road Again” LOL!

This is by no means a complete list, but here are some fall (on campus) audition dates:

Ball State: Nov 9
CMU: Nov 10
CCM: Dec 1
CCU: Nov 9
Hartt: Dec 7
Montclair: Nov 9
OCU: Nov 15, 16
Penn St: Dec 7
Point Park: Nov 9
UArts: Nov 23, Dec 7

Looks like Nov 9th is a good day to audition! Not sure if any of these date are ED only.

@SU88BFA I can’t Private Message yet or else I would ask you that way, but where did you find the UArts audition dates? I’ve been looking everywhere for them and maybe I just missed them some how. Could you possibly send me a link or point me in the direction of where they are? Thanks!
