A student athlete was offered contingent on early decision but the parent went ahead and applied to the school on a regular decision. How will this affect the offer from the coaches? Will it void the offer to play for them?
A few things:
- This is a question to ask the coach who has offered support. This should be the first thing you check on.
- The early decision application due dates are usually on or around Nov 1. It’s possible to email or call the admissions office to change it to ED before this deadline.
- Why is the parent completing the application?
Huge red flag
Was this an accident or does the parent have an issue with the ED application? If its not affordable, that ED is not appropriate but the Coach needs to be made aware that the athlete cannot commit until financials are clear.
If it was an accident you can usually just change your decision round either via the portal or by emailing admissions.
(I am not going to comment on the “parent applied” part, but I agree with the general sentiment - OP should clarify what that means/happened)
I believe it was intentional as they mentioned that they applied regular. It would be a shame to see the kids offer get messed up. I’m sure they don’t want to be locked into ED.
What was the reason for doing so?
I’m going to put some urgency on this…the student needs to contact the coach ASAP, before admissions does. If the kid had a pre-read and has full coach support, admissions will be looking for the app and when they see RD, they are going to contact the coach. It is possible full coach support will not extend into the RD round.
Whatever the reason, my question is what will this do to the offer? Will it void it?
Not automatically. That’s up to the coach and the school. Coaches want a guarantee that the athlete won’t chose somewhere else last minute. On the school side, many don’t consider coach support during RD.
Only the coach can answer this.
That’s kind of the conclusion I was coming to. Your response makes a lot of sense and confirms it. I will definitely advise them to do that.
Thank you.
I was actually a little shocked when this was being told to me. I wouldn’t even imagine doing this. The coaches gave them the terms of the deal and they aren’t living up to their end of the bargain. Hopefully it’s not too late for them to rectify this
I hope so too. Good luck, they are fortunate to have you helping them.
Typically the AO keeps the coaches apprised of the status of the students that they have listed for support. There is a very real chance that the offer goes away if the application stays RD. I know of some instances where RD support was provided but it was always worked out upfront and was for specific situations like a highly desired NESCAC prospect trying for an Ivy or MIT in EA. Some coaches and AOs will make an exception in these situations but I doubt that “my mommy/daddy made me” qualifies as one of those situations. ED is the quid pro quo for guaranteed admissions.
If this is not about you - then the student and/or parent needs to be asking these questions.
I agree.
Regardless, it seems the question has been answered. As asking for a friend posts are against ToS, I’m closing the thread. Thanks for your understanding.
