Hi there!

I know I am only a Junior in high school, but I am very nervous about auditioning. I don’t know what to expect and my voice runs on the more operatic side. I can sing regular broadway but I am better at classical broadway, like Oklahoma!. I am an okay dancer and I know with training I will be better. I don’t know. Am I freaking out too much? Please I’m scared any advice?

Hey there! My main advice would be to NOT worry. I’m a current student at CCPA, and we have all different types of singers/actors/dancers in the program. Musical theatre calls for so many different styles and types, and CCPA really does embrace that. That’s not to say they won’t challenge you to sing different styles or explore different roles, because you will certainly be challenged in that regard. However, they look for all different types, and it should NOT get in the way of your acceptance to the school.

As far as dance goes, it’s nothing to worry about. If you audition off campus for the school, you won’t do a dance call. If you audition in Chicago, there is a dance call, but it is not the determining factor in your audition. They are not looking for perfect dancers. They are however looking for people who can move gracefully, pick up choreography and sell it, and have a good attitude!

Try not to stress out! I know the college audition process is daunting, so stress is inevitable. You still have TONS of time to prepare (take dance classes or work on your contemporary singing if you’re worried about it!). But realize you will end up where you are supposed to be. Work hard in preparing for your auditions, pick material that suits you, choose a varied list of schools, and be true to yourself in the process, and you WILL find a school that’s right!
