Early visit as a junior

I am bringing my son to visit Lafayette over his school’s spring break in April. Since we are flying from California it is unlikely he will be able to make this trip again. I noticed on the web site that tours only occur on Saturday, but we are scheduled to arrive in Easton on Tuesday afternoon, April 17 and plan to stay overnight. Since this is his first tour of colleges I am unsure how to tell him to proceed. Is it possible for him to arrange a tour on Tuesday afternoon or Wed morning with the admissions office? If so, should he call Dana (the rep for CA) or just call the general admissions office number? The official interviews don’t start until May 1. So, does that mean he will do an alumni interview in CA next fall? Any chance he can have a sleepover or eat dinner with a student on Tuesday? What about arranging meetings with professors or dept chairs - is this done through the admissions office or directly with the professor?

ricegal,

Okay, I’ll take this one question at a time. You seem to have a few things confused, so I’ll try my best to untangle any misinformation.

In April, we will be offering tours as we always do. Tours are available on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday at 10am, 11am, 1pm, 2pm, and 3:15pm. On Saturday, we offer a combination group information session and tour (10am and 11am, respectively). You would have to call the Admissions Office up at (610) 300-5100 to make an appointment for a Saturday visit.

There is no need to call up Dana Matassino to schedule a weekday tour. Just walk in to Markle Hall and tell the receptionist that you are here to take a student-led tour. I understand how you might be confused about our tour schedule. That particular webpage is a little misleading!

Since interviews for the Class of 2011 do not begin until May 1st, you would just miss having an on-campus interview. However, an off-campus alumni interview is definitely not out of the question. After your son applies to the college, he will be contacted with information to facilitate a meeting with an alumni admissions representative in your area (assuming there is one).

He could absolutely sleep over with a student host! However, you must be sure to set this up at least TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE. The overnight program concludes in late April, so you would just make it in time. To check availability and/or schedule an overnight visit, you would simply call up the Admissions Office at (610) 330-5100. The Student Host Program will mail additional information to your home as the day of your visit draws nearer with the name of the student host and a tentative itinerary.

While you are on the phone setting up the overnight visit, you could ask about setting up an appointment to meet with a professor in your son’s area(s) of interest. Usually, visiting students will call ahead before their visit to the college to arrange this sort of meeting. There is no need to email a professor directly in this situation.

WHEW! Did I answer everything?

All the best,

Okay, thanks, Justin for clearing up my confusion about the tours. However, regarding the sleepover - the web site says only for seniors. My son is still a junior.

ricegal,

Yes, you are correct that only seniors can stay overnight. I regret not mentioning that (rather important) detail.

Chalk it up to a rather hectic Saturday!

Lafayette definitely should fix up their website. It kind of seems all over the place.

I really had to read through everything about the visitation & all. People can easily become confused.

lrnprcll,

A redesign of the admissions portion of the Lafayette website is currently underway. Expect it to be much clearer and easier to navigate.
