Hey everyone!
So I recently got this email from the University of Michigan Engineering department telling me about the UROP program. It states that the UROP Program has a 6-12 hour/week workload and offers 4 credits per term. So i am an international student from India and my school follows the CBSE Curriculum. The CBSE Curriculum is not recognized by the university (unlike the IB or A levels) and I probably will be attending the University with no credits at all. So i talked to one of the counselors and they suggested taking the Hindi placement exam which on passing I can get 8 credits( according to her 1 foreign language placement test is considered in credit for COE). So like the UROP and the Hindi Placement exam what all other activities or programs can I take part in the University to earn extra college credit. ( apart from the basic requirements like physics, chem etc. in the first year)?
Check this link out, you may be able to take some CLEP exams to get some classes out of the way.
Are clep exams offer at international centres??and when can we take these exams @97hannah
I would only do UROP if you genuinely enjoy researching.
Since you’re an international student, it might be worth it to enroll in Fall 2016 at UMich, then instead enroll at Washtenaw Community college in Winter 2016. Since most freshmen engineering classes are just intro level physics, chem, and calc all of which are accepted as transfer credit. If you took those classes with CBSE, I would take a full course load of 22 credits at Washtenaw. It’ll be way easier there, plus the grade doesn’t matter (and won’t appear on your UMich transcript) since its just transfer credit as long as you pass. They even offer humanities and social science classes that fulfill the Intellectual Breadth requirement.
Plus, its way cheaper at WCC too.
Only disadvantage is that you have to take the bus all the way there.
I checked the College Board site for international testing centers for CLEP, and India does not have one. I am sure that University of Michigan has a testing center, so you can CLEP once you get here. Usually, you call and set up a testing time with them and they can talk you through the process. Good Luck! Do you need general information about the CLEP process?
