I have a few concerns about state university criteria for transfer students. I am going to earn my A.S. and graduate from high school at the same time. I have talked to a university recruiters at college fairs and have been told that I would have to apply to universities as a freshman student because I did not finish earning my A.S. AFTER high school. Has anyone here been told this or experienced what these college recruiters are telling me? I was under the impression that so long as I had a decent GPA, completed all of the core curriculum, had a certain number of college credits, and attended an accredited junior college, I would be able to apply as a transfer student.

You can definitely apply as a transfer student to most schools. The only exceptions would be highly selective universities, like the ivys or top 20 schools. However, all the other schools should accept you as a transfer, assuming that you took all those college classes on a college campus in classes with regular college students. The classes you took / credits you earned have to be the same as what non-H.S. students took/earned at the college, that’s the only requirement.

If the schools you talked to aren’t highly selective and they still told you that you had to apply as a freshman, then they didn’t understand what you have been doing. Just go ahead and apply as a transfer, they’ll accept you. I was accepted to several universities to transfer even though I earned my A.S. one month before my B.S. Good luck!

Just one question, why do you want to apply as a transfer rather than a fr applicant?

You are going to be able to transfer the same number of credits either way and depending on the school, factors like admission rate, need based FA and availability of merit scholarships can be advantageous for fr applicants.

You should definitely apply as a transfer student and make sure to send in all your transcripts AFTER you earn your A.S.
That’s what I did and it worked out swell for me :)

Yes, I would rather apply as a transfer student, entomom. That was one of the main reasons why I chose to enter the dual credit program at my junior college.

Thanks, all of you, for your replies and advice. All of this is very helpful : )
