earthquake history

I’m sure lots of you guys know this, but it’s the centennial of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Lots of the original campus was destroyed - the two pillar entrance, memchu, lots of the quad, and a 10 story (80 ft) tall arch that formed in front of memorial court (the small quad in front of memchu with the black sculptures). Instead of rebuilding this massive 10 story arch called the Memorial Arch, the braintrust at the time decided to just keep the base and build little red roofs over them.

These are the best pictures of the arch that I can find online. There’s a GREAT photo of it in Green Library when you guys go there.

Current look…just for reference…

So with that aside, the threat of another earthquake, although small, is real. I definitely won’t let the possibility of an earthquake deter me from going, but it would be comforting to hear of any proactive measures done to make the campus more “earthquake-proof.” You guys know what they are?

Man…I wish they rebuilt Mem Arch…simply stunning…

“So with that aside, the threat of another earthquake, although small, is real.”
It isn’t small - 62% chance of a >=6.7 earthquake in the next 26 years, or something like that. But that’s only a 7% chance for it to hit when I’m here.
