Earthquake in SoCal

We just had a good shaker…good roller in Long Beach. Likely a mid 5…but could have been stronger if further away.

5.8 in Chino Hills according to USGS:
[Magnitude 5.8 - GREATER LOS ANGELES AREA, CALIFORNIA](http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsus/Quakes/ci14383980.php)

^I’m in Long Beach too. Very nice-sized.

My phone service is even being funky.

^ Everyone calling to check on loved ones…;)

Yup. My dad just called my grandparents in Seal Beach, they said they felt it too.

People on the news are even saying that Las Vegas and San Diego felt it.

I was outside gardening and didn’t even feel it. D came running out though. I guess they’re easier to feel inside than outside.

I’m in Ventura on the beach north of LA. Pretty good shake but a quick one. I was on the cel during the movement but hung up and then couldn’t get a call out…everyone is on the phone.

^It was LONG here. Although it probably felt longer than it was.

No immediate reports of damage/injury in LA County. :)

ebeee, Ventura! You vacationing or do you live there?

I did not feel it in north end of Santa Barbara but my husband works downtown SB and he said he felt it and all the pictures in his office were moving. He could not believe we didn’t feel it at home.

Holy cow, I hope everyone is OK!

Felt it in Northern San Diego County!

27 aftershocks counted so far. O_O

Cel phone service is terrible right now. Makes me realize what it would be like during a large quake i.e. Northridge…hmmm. I am so dependent on that cel to reach DH, DD, DS…

^ Yes, I remember watching an old earthquake preparedness show (before cell phones were very prevalent) that said to have an out-of-state emergency contact (for you and your relatives) and communicate through them in a major emergency. The show claimed getting in touch with an out-of-state number would be easier than a local number, where the phone systems are tied up…Don’t know if this is true or not.

I haven’t heard of any damage or injuries yet, so that’s good news. Seems like this one wasn’t as jarring as some can be, more of a rolling motion.

As for cell phones, I guess families should arrange in advance to check in online (or texts?) if the cell systems are overwhelmed during emergencies. Something to talk to my kids and H about, I think.

No problem. We are too familiar with earthquakes. Wild fires are worse than earthquakes.

momof2inca…I couldn’t even get any txts out to my friends. And they’re all saying they’re having the same problems.

Felt both initial rumble and looooong, pretty loud shaking too at home near Long Beach. Stuff tumbled off bookshelves and the puppy got scared and ran under the couch, but other than that, no problems. Staying off the phone on purpose until later in the day.

Is it still worth living in SoCal knowing that you will continue to experience earthquakes like this one and worse?
