additional essay: about my love for houston and how much i appreciate coming from such a diverse background

what do you think my chances of getting accepted are? any ideas on strengthening my application?

You obviously know your statistics look competitive. A third strong SAT II will help.

I don’t know what to think about the essay regarding your love for Houston. I’m just wondering how much of yourself you can project for that. It’s definetely true that one of the lowpoints of Yale is the city surround it (but the immediacies are ok… and hey, you have NY a short train-ride away!), so … I’m not sure what my point is with that.

Anyways, your stats seem to indicate you have aptitudes in the hard sciences / mathematics. That sounds hook-isk to me (give good ol’ Summers a slap in the face) and it will definetely help if you can let that shine through your EC’s and perhaps even the essay? You can always let the admin officer know you come from a diverse background through a single sentece… unless somehow it’s very important to you try not to over-exploit it. Be subtle.

i forgot to add in my academic honors that im a member of mu alpha theta (math honor society)

ive also gotten 1st in 2 or 3 city-wide math competitions, and placed at some district computer science competitions so could i consider those academic honors as well? i don’t know where else on the application i would put them.

i’m still unsure about my essay. i had a few people read it who know me well and one who i dont know well who used to be on the harvard admissions committee, all of them thought it showed a lot of personality and was a strong essay. that said, all of them were also houstonians so they might have been a bit bias.

i also still have yet to pick an activity to write about for my short answer. i was thinking about writing about visiting my friend in europe, but then i think at a school like yale that would be pretty trite and wouldnt help my admissions chances. maybe that would be a good place to include something about math/science?

anyways thanks for your opinion. im getting really nervous about my admissions desicion even though its quite a long way away and i guess all i can do is send in the best app i can and hope for the best.

I wouldn’t send in a resume. Colleges specifically discourage you from sending them.

hey, wut HS do u go to? I go to Cypress Falls in NW Houston!

Wow - it is really creepy just how close your stats are to mine…in just about everyway. Identical AP Scores in the same subjects, nearly identical SAT scores, National Merit Commended, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, I’m an Eagle Scout, which is pretty much the male equivalent of the silver award, and that is also what I wrote an essay about, and we are the same rank in HS classes of similar sizes, and we both have done well in computer science and math competitions…and we have the exact same senior courses…

I applied early to yale and was deferred - but that doesn’t necessarily mean the same will happen for you, depending on your recs, ineterview, etc. Sounds like you’re a strong candidate though! (or at least i hope so, because that means I am!)

I’m still kinda creeped out by this.

if anyone is wondering, i was accepted, early action.

Haha, oops, yeah I missed the dates on the posts. Well, anyway hopefully thats a good sign of things to come for me at least…

Samian Quazi, I am in the Cy-Fair district also. I know where Cy-Falls is. I just moved here and am having to take several classes on-level because I missed many credits (foreign languages 1 and 2). I was wondering about the GPA. Do you happen to know the GPA for the first and second person on class rank?

haha i honestly dont. but i can tell you that i was ranked #1 in my jr. year, and my GPA then was a 6.91…hey PM me if u wanna talk some more

Really?!! Wow. Thanks for letting me know the GPA. So, I assume you started taking Spanish3K your freshman year and progressed from there? Because thats what most students in my grade did, so their averages are a lot higher than mine.

wut abt you texangirl? where do u go?

just a random post. I need to pass time cos I’m really bored now. Can someone start a thread that’ll relieve stress for me? I’ll b working on it. Lol, this guy is mad
