What do you think is the easiest major at Duke, and why? No one should base the major they take based on how easy it is, but my friends and I were talking about it and all of us wonder which major is the most likely to give you as close to a 4.0 by the end of your four years in college as possible.

I’m a political science/philosophy double major no matter what is said, though :).

Typically seen as easier majors at Duke: Sociology, African American Studies, History, Women’s Studies, Markets & Management Certificate, Cul Anth, EOS, ICS, Visual Arts, Psych (only non bio/neuroscience courses)

Pub Pol/Poly Sci are fairly similar on the difficulty scale based on what I heard. I know more pub pol poeple - it’s certainly not the hardest, and not the easiest major. I’d say philosophy is supposedly “easier” than either. Pub Pol’s classes are typically “harder” than something like history, but “easier” than economics. I wouldn’t say Art History is “easy” unless you are really really good at memorizing things - then it’d be an easier major for you. Remembering 200 paintings, the artist, the date, museum, etc. for a slide test doesn’t sound easy to me personally. Plus, they have to write pretty long papers.

I was an Art History major, and it’s pretty easy to score a 4.0 for your major GPA. That said, I wrote a lot of really long papers and memorized a ton of paintings (dates, dimensions, you name it), as the previous poster said, so if that’s your thing than it will be easier for you than for others.

History, EOS both can be really challenging. One of my best friends was an EOS major and it’s very mathy/computer-based…ie she had to use MATLAB for a few classes. History=exorbitant sums of reading and lots of papers.

Personally, i’d go with Cul Anth, Sociology, Women’s Studies, AAS, and maybe the foreign languages if that’s something you’re good at.

It all really depends on where your strengths like. In my opinion, philosophy is probably the most underrated major there is, since that is truly a liberal arts education in that they train you to think critically about a variety of things. Many have gone on to law school as well. EOS is actually a pretty hard major, it’s just that the intro courses are notoriously easy, but once you get past them, it is a decent amount of work. History is underrated as well. Duke’s history department is pretty strong, and you’ll do a ton of reading and writing no doubt. Duke’s pub pol and poli sci departments are pretty solid as well. I’d say it’s a tie between cult anth, women studies, sociology and AAS.
