East Coast Problem

Hi. I’m gonna be a senior in HS this year in NC. My parents want me to go to UNC Chapel Hill and all my friends will be going there pretty much, but I really want to go to UW. I love Chapel Hill, but even though it’s an amazing university, it doesn’t offer the major I want (speech/hearing). UW has an awesome program for that (or so I hear) and Seattle is my fav city!

The problem is that the tuition is significantly different between in-state at UNC and OOS at UW. (I was hoping financial aid could cover part of it?). But my parents also have a problem w/ transporting me from one coast to the other in terms of moving in & flying back on holidays. We do have friends who live in Portland, but I actually have no idea how close that is to Seattle.

Does anyone know of someone who’s OOS at UW and manages to travel really far? Is it reasonable or possible? Or should I just focus on UNC?
Thanks!

I’m sorry, but I have an additional question. Is the admissions for UW a rolling admissions? Because I didn’t see an early action/early decision date.

well i live in Washington and I can tell you that Portland and Seattle are not far at all. It is about a 2 and half hour car ride. And yes UW is rolling admission.
Hope that helps a little

UW is sort of rolling admission. You may hear early, or they may wait until the very last – early April, I think. They do not give you an answer X number of weeks after receiving all your paperwork.

There is very little if any financial aid for out-of-state.

Portland is 2 1/2 hours away of you drive like a maniac and there is no traffic. A more realistic travel time is 4 hours.

Are there any speech/hearing programs that are closer to home? It would be worth investigating, so that you have more options.

All that said, good luck!

I actually have two friends at UW who are OOS students from NC. They might be able to give you some insight. Send me a PM if you want to ask them questions directly.

I used to live in Portland, and I can tell you that trip takes about 3 and a half hours to 4 hours while driving around the speed limit. You can make it in less time if you drive a bit faster. :)

As for admissions, there’s a priority deadline of December 1 which basically means they’ll try to give you your admission decision sooner. That’s not a guarantee though as many people last year applied early and still didn’t hear until March/April. I’d try and get your application in a few weeks before December 1 if possible if you want an earlier decision. That also depends on your stats. If you don’t make it through the first screening, they may put you on the review list for a second reading (delaying your admissions notification). Good luck!

Yeah…I live in Vancouver (5 to 10 min away from Portland) and it takes about 3 1/2 to 4 hours to get to Seattle, including, of course, time for the necessary rest area stops, gas, and breakfast. Traffic sucks, too. (:

But isn’t the priority deadline also for those who are wanting scholarships or grants? I think they’re given more consideration or something…

Speaking of financial aid, from what I’ve heard so far, UW in general isn’t very good at giving out scholarships. There were people at my high school who I thought for sure would’ve gotten a scholarship, but didn’t get any.

Also, I applied I believe about a week before the December 1 deadline…I didn’t hear back until the beginning of March. I nearly tore my hair out every time I check my app status. lol

My D applied mid November and heard back before Christmas - OOS. This was mainly bc her high school had a rule and cut off date about all app materials getting to the GC’s well before Thanksgiving break. I think by mid December before Christmas break is probably when the first big wave of apps start rolling in.
