I was at Harvard for the 78 snow storm. It was fun for us. They shut down the university for the first time ever. We dug tunnels, made sculptures and made a ski jump on the library steps. But a lot of the kitchen workers and others who lived on the south shore lost everything. We had a collection for them.
Was 2014 worse? Polar vortices and extreme amount snow week after week. Where I am it hasn’t exceeded 2014 yet.
Meh. Par for the course here. Subzero temps, snow, wind aren’t atypical for winter. I think the media hypes things up too much sometimes. I don’t like the naming of snowstorms and weather patterns like they are hurricanes.
I’m east of DC but on the western edge of the predicted path. Right now, it’s on track to remain off the coast so for us if the path stays the same, we will only get a dusting or so. However, if it shifts west at all, we could get enough to cancel school. Just my luck that I needed to do my normal big grocery run and both stores were packed in the middle of the afternoon due to storm paranoia.
We rarely get snow/super cold temps this early in winter. D18 arrived home from Southern California. just in time for the cold blast. She’s home for three more weeks and didn’t expect to see snow at all. We usually get snow mostly in February, if at all, but it’s already snowed twice since she’s been home (minimal amounts). I’m sure she will be totally ready to head back for warmer weather!
@Consolation, if your power goes out, contact me! We have a generator and plenty of room for visitors!
D leaves for semester abroad Thurs evening…luckily heading west.
Here in Ohio it’s alreay been below 0 and clearly that will continue…
We are in the path of the storm and of course DH is leaving early tmrw morning for a business trip (driving south). Kids are eagerly awaiting the school cancellation that is sure to come. I just hope we get the call the night before and not at 5:30 am as has happened in the past.
For the storm of '78 we were celebrating my brothers 3rd birthday and had planned a party with relatives at our house. Luckily 2 of my mom’s brothers and their families lived on the same block as us. They put on their snow boots, bundled up and walked over for a great afternoon together.
Stay safe everyone!
So far I’m on the very western edge of this one. Snow showers and a tad windy is the forecast now.
I’ve been through more huge snow storms then I can count.
Tomorrow it’s going to a balmy 27. I’m going to take advantage and get out with the dogs before the next blast arrives. Poor pups haven’t been able to go for a walk in days.
Delta has just issued travel waivers…
Argh!!!
Thanks for the link, @“Cardinal Fang”. I just shared it with our son who is headed back to NY Thursday AM. He is checking in with his chain of command to see if or what type of leniency will be given to cadets who might not be able to make it back to post on time.
Please, please, please let this mean another day or two at home. Classes don’t start until Monday. There is no reason for the Thursday recall. He’s been grumbling about this all break. I don’t really hold out any hope, but I can dream.
Honestly…I would like my kid to get out of here tomorrow if he can. He has some jobs on Saturday and Sunday…and he really needs to be there.
But he will do,what he will do. I’m just going to fret.
Snow expected in South Georgia tomorrow. School is cancelled.
This sounds miserable, my DS needs to head back to Boston at the end of this week.
My younger d had to drive up to Boston today and will leave tomorrow for the office in the Berkshires where I guess she will hunker down and stay there until she can get back to NY
@ChoatieMom , you just reminded me that USNA students all come back Thursday also. We sponsor several mids who are all due to fly in on Thursday. I’m supposed to pick up at least one of them. I hoping they have direct flights and since flying from CA, none arrive until late afternoon after the storm has cleared out.
Back when dh was teaching at the Academy, we had a major snowstorm right when the mids were due back. We had three mids stuck in our 2 bedroom apt, as well as one of dh’s classmates who was in town for a wedding and got stuck when his flight home was canceled. The mids were so excited to get an extra day of leave as the Academy almost never closes for weather but they did that year (‘95).
I really want to have a bit of snow so we could get a snow day out of it. This bone-crushing cold is getting really annoying. At DS’ HS today a boy is wearing a t-shirt/jeans! Can’t believe it!!!
I had actually left Boston in 1978, but was on hand for the Chicago blizzard of 79. Our one-way street near the lake was literally filled with snow from car tops on one side to car tops on the other. The city completely failed to plow effectively in most of the city. In some parts, the city eventually resorted to digging out blocks of cars one by one, then towing them to a random nearby cleared block and “parking” them. People had to just walk around and around until they found their car. Sometimes festooned with parking tickets, even though the block was filled with 3 ft or so of unplowed snow when those tickets were awarded.
D has a flight here for Friday. I hope she makes it and manages to miss the severe cold on Saturday (although it will be pretty cold here too).
I really don’t think they should name storms like hurricanes. Insurance companies take advantage of that and reduce your compensation for “any named storm”. People in the snow zone should protest to these TV weather people that their lust for drama could be costing their viewers money.
Ugh, I was worried about this. Son travels from San Diego to Newark to Syracuse then bussing to Ithaca on Thursday :-S
I hope all our kids make it to their destinations safely
