East Coast snowicane

You thought hurricanes didn’t happen in the winter? Welcome to the new world of global climate change.

“By Thursday, the exploding storm will, in many ways, resemble a winter hurricane”

Wonderful…my kid is supposed to fly from Hartford to Phoenix…via Detroit…leaving at 5 am Thursday morning.

Shoot.

Do ya think the Capital Weather Gang are taking this one seriously?

very large and powerful storm
exploding storm
bomb cyclone
a winter hurricane, battering easternmost New England with potentially damaging winds in addition to blinding snow.
mother lode of numbing cold
unloading hazardous snow and ice in highly unusual locations not accustomed to such weather
explosively intensify

Change that…it’s Hartford Atlanta Phoenix.

Not good.

My dd’s intended flight is Newark to SFO Thurs am - what’s the likelihood with this forecast…hmmmm

Apparently you never lived through the Blizzard of 1978 in New England. 27 inches of snow with 75 mph winds.

I’m worried about people freezing to death.

The weather folks in northern New England are monitoring it but downplaying it thus far.

I am sooo over winter and it has just begun. The coldest week since 1918 finishes up today only to be followed by a NorEaster starting tomorrow night, followed by temps in the teens again for several days. The goal with my now ex-husband was to be a snowbird beginning this winter, many of my friends left just a few days ago. I’m stuck here freezing and worrying about how many times I’ll have to pay to have this very long driveway plowed this winter. I hate winter/snow/cold/ice. Bring back summer! Yes, I’ll have a bit of cheese with that whine please.

@TomSrOfBoston I remember very well the Blizzard of 78. My father left the Cape to help those stranded on the highways and was gone for days. If I remember, the Cape only got 18" or so but with the wind and everything it was a true blizzard for sure.

S is not very used to cold weather and doesn’t really have the clothing for it. Perhaps he will buy some warmer clothing–there are some nice sales now, including at Columbia 30% off selected items.

Actually, I was in New Hampshire during the 1978 blizzard. It was something. We were able to cross country ski in the unplowed for DAYS streets.

This Thursday event…it’s not the snow. Western MA and CT supposedly will get about 2-4 inches total. It’s the wind.

Oh…and the kid IS going via Detroit…which sounds better at this point than Atlanta!

My Atlanta kid is actually in Augusta this month…hoping she doesn’t have to deal with ice and snow…again.

Great. DD is scheduled to be at Yale on Thursday.

If none of our kids were traveling…you know this storm just wouldn’t be happening!

@thumper- any chance airline will allow and facilitate a change for a Wednesday departure?

We just checked their website…and nothing posted yet. So…not without a fee at this point.

Right now they have no travel advisory alerts at all. But DS is watching…and he will be on it.

It’s Delta.

So, so tired of cold…can’t even think about storm.

Also, you sent my H and me to googling what’s different about hurricanes and nor’easters, which is apparently more subtle than I thought. And interesting to find out that Sandy was, as it hit us, a hybrid of both! This one sounds Sandy-ish, though hopefully staying more out to sea.

Oh, joy. If we lose electricity in these temperatures, we will be in REAL trouble. No generator and no alternative heat source.

At least I don’t have to worry about my mother. She has a permanently-installed stand-by generator with two huge propane tanks. She went through Sandy and Snowtober by herself in her late 80s, without power for up to 2 weeks. Never again.

Thanks for the good news, @“Cardinal Fang” !

^My mom just put in a permanent stand-by generator, thankfully. She lives in the PA woods and though it’s getting better, some years ago her electricity went out much too frequently.

I aim to please, @Consolation.

I was in Rhode Island for the blizzard of '78. The whole state was shut down for a week.
