Is coming from a prestigious northeast boarding school a hook at california schools (Claremont schools, UC schools, not stanford) because of how few people from the northeast look at california?

not at all. being oos for any california school makes it much tougher to gain admission.

Lillynch, why do you say that’s true? For UCs, certainly. Beyond that, I don’t know, but I imagine California schools are as anxious for geographic diversity as any others.

To the OP: I doubt that it will be a hook at UCs because there is so much preference given to in-state and the schools tend to be very familiar with the top CA high schools. If you have CA residency, it will be another story. Regarding Claremont, I don’t know how it will look on an application, but I wouldn’t go as far as to call it a “hook.” There are lots of kids here who attended prestigious boarding schools in the northeast (and in many other places, for that matter). I’m sure that admissions reps will be familiar with your school and will recognize the strength of your education, but “hook” seems too strong a word.

double no. one, out of state is tough, and youre from a prestigious school, meaning everyone from your school is smart.

If you’ve accomplished a lot at your prestigious school, the top UCs (like Berkeley, UCLA, etc.) are much more possible – your status in the NE offsets your OOS-ness.

From a really top prep AESDCHG, you’ll have no problem at any UC if your in the top 30%, CMC is easy and all C schools except for Pomona which is easier than say Amherst from a prep, Stanford is hard but they take about 10 plus/yr from each.

99% of UC Berkeley and UCSD students are in the top 10% of their high school class. 97% of UCLA students are in the top 10% of their high school class. Over 90% of these students are in state applicants. This means you likely would have to be even higher than the top 10% of your high school class oos to get into these schools. Likely top 5%. OOS significantly hurts your odds to UC’s. being from a well regarded prep school really wont make up for this. However, for Claremont schools, oos does not hurt you at all. and being from a prestigious prep school will help you significantly more with admissions at claremonts than at UC’s. OOS applying to USC will also not hurt you, and they also will look kindly on the prestigious prep school. I would focus on the claremont schools and USC if i was you, as the top UC’s out of state are very difficult, and if you could get into them, the tuition is around the same as top privates which likely will give you more personal attention. That being said, top UC’s have excellent programs and prestige. But if you can get into them OOS, you likely could get into elite privates. Best of luck!
